Biography
Hugh le Despenser[1] was born about 1308, son and heir of Hugh "the Younger," 2nd Lord le Despenser, by his wife Eleanor (Clare).[2] "In the chancery rolls, Huchon is usually called 'Hugh son of Hugh le Despenser the son'. ... As [Huchon is] what he's known as in Edward's chamber journal, it almost certainly must have been the name his family called him."[3]
Hugh le Despenser, Knt., 3rd Lord Despenser, lord of Glamorgan and Morgannwg, Wales... married Elizabeth de Montagu, widow of Giles de Badlesmere, Knt. (Hugh and Elizabeth had no issue.) Hugh's widow m Guy de Bryan.[4]
Both Hugh's father and his grandfather were executed in 1326, after siding with Edward II against an uprising led by Edward's wife Isabella and her consort, Roger Mortimer, to place Edward's eldest son on the throne (Edward III). Hugh also stood with Edward II.
Hugh was at Caerphilly Castle when it was beseiged by William la Zouche. The castle "held out until March 1327, when the garrison surrendered on the condition that the younger Hugh was pardoned, his father having been already executed."[5] Hugh was imprisoned at Bristol Castle, December 15, 1328, but pardoned in 1331: released July 5, 1331, after the downfall of Isabella and Roger Mortimer - Edward III executed Roger Mortimer in 1330 (see "Death and Aftermath" in Wikipedia's article on Edward II)[4]
"Huchon was released by Edward III after the downfall of Roger Mortimer and Isabella, and later made an excellent marriage to the earl of Salisbury's daughter Elizabeth Montacute".[3]
Hugh was restored to his grandfather's title of Baron le Despencer in 1338. He died without issue in 1349. His heir was his nephew, Edward le Despenser, who was created Baron le Despencer of a new creation in 1375.[1][6]
Sir Hugh le Despenser died February 8, 1349.[6][7] His wife Elizabeth Montague died 1359, and they were both buried in Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucestershire.[1]
