Biography

Her name appears variously as Alice[1][2], Alce[3], and Else[4]. It is the word of Rev. Elias Dodson Jr, the grandson of Alice's brother Joseph, that we accept as the correct form of her name, since he was a well educated man. He is also the source from which we are aware which Alice Dodson she was.

She was married to her first cousin Lazarus Dodson about 1750, probably in Prince William County, Virginia as this is where she was living at the time, and they remained in the area until about 1766.

On 9 Oct 1763, she and her husband were baptized into the Broad Run Baptist Church.[2]

Not much else is known about the rest of her life in Pittsylvania County other than she was no doubt a member of the Little Sandy Creek Baptist Church there, as that is where her husband ministered.

She was named in her husband's will which was proved in court 16 Sep 1799.[3] This is the last mention of her that has been found in the records.

Slaves

Alcy became a slave owner upon the death of her husband. In Lazarus Dodson's 1795 will, he named "Young Lucy" and transferred ownership of her to his "well beloved wife." Dodson also willed his wife Alcy an enslaved female named Marjory.[5] The inventory is shown at the bottom of digital page 371 (both left and right sides) and the top left side of digital page 372 of 777.[6]
