Biography

Jesse Dodson was born in the early 1770's in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Jesse was a son of Thomas Dodson and Mary Neville. The following two deeds prove that Jesse was the son of Thomas "second fork" Dodson.

Jesse married Judah Combs (also known as Judith) on the 19th March 1793, in Halifax County, Virginia.[1]

Jesse and wife Judah moved to Tennessee settling near Claiborne County. Jesse and Judah became members of the Big Spring Baptist Church[2], where Jesse's Uncle, Rev. Jesse Dodson, was pastor. Judah was received as a member by experience in April 1801 and Jesse joined by letter in August 1801. The church minutes are not clear as to when they left the church.[3]

Jesse was married to Elizabeth (maiden name unknown). The date of Jesse's marriage to Elizabeth is unknown.

Jesse's occupation was a physician. Jesse was commissioned as a surgeon in the War of 1812, but did not serve.

Jesse and family were living in Kentucky in 1816 with brother William and George Combs (wife's mother).

Jesse purchased on the 25th of March, 1816, from Alexander Hittson and Samuel Dodson land in Pulaski County, Kentucky, the deed reads as follows: "Know all men by these presents that we Alexander Hittson, & Samuel Dodson, both of the County of Halifax and state of Virginia, have bargained & sold unto Jesse Dodson, of the County of Hardin, and state of Kentucky, one eighth part each (except one) Town Lott given to said Samuel Dodson, of a tract or parcel of land formerly the property of William Dodson Deceased, which fell to his father Thomas Dodson Deceased, & by him willed to the Legatees William Johnson, James Johnson, Stephen Johnson, Alexander Hittson, Jesse Dodson the heirs of Thomas Dodson Junr, Dec'd & Samuel Dodson, lying & being in the county of Pulaski and state of Kentucky, adjoining the Town of Somerset, together with the water, water courses and all appurtanances thereto, for the sum of ninety dollars, to each of us in hand paid, In Witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands, seals this 25th day of March 1816, Interlined in the eighth . . . Jesse sold the land he purchased in Pulaski County, Kentucky from Alexander Hittson and Samuel Dodson to Galen R. Elliott on the 20th April 1816. The deed reads as follows: "This Indenture made this 20th day of April in the year on thousand eight hundred and sixteen between Jesse Dodson of the County of Hardin, & State of Kentucky of the one part, and Galen R. Jesse sold to Thomas Lee on the 27th of April 1824, for three hundred dollars a quarter section of land in the state of Illinois that had been originally granted to Joseph James. Jesse's wife, Charity waived her dower rights, which reads in part as follows: ". . . State of Kentucky Hickman County I Ben Barner clerk of the county court for the county aforesaid, do hereby certify that Jesse Dodson and Charity his wife, parties to the within deed personally appeared before me this day and acknowledged the same to be their act and deed, she the said Charity Dodson being examined by me seperately, privily and apart from her said husband, and the said deed was then and there shown and fully explained to her and upon such privy examination she declared that she did freely and willingly relinquish her right of dower to the land and premises therein contained without the treats or persuasion of her said husband, that that she was willing the same should be admitted to record In Testimony that I have recorded the same together with this certificate I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of my said office to be hereunto affixed the 29th day of April in the year 824 and in the 32nd year of the Commonwealth Ben Barner CLC CC"[6]

Jesse died before the 6th of May, 1839 in Hickman County, Kentucky, as Jesse's will was admitted for probate in Hickman county on the 6th of May 1839.

Research Notes

History of Big Spring Baptist Church: ". . . The Church is the oldest standing structure in Claiborne county, built just prior to the establishment of Tennessee as the 16th state in the Union. In fact, the building was a thriving Baptist church years before the formation of the county. Land from nearby Grainger and Hawkins counties was pulled to create the county of Claiborne in 1801. Drew Harrell and Tidence Lane spent the winter of 1795-96 erecting the structure on land belonging to Robert King. At the time, the church was officially inside the state of North Carolina. Tennessee had not yet become a state. In July of 1800, the members officially established Big Spring Primitive Baptist Church. By that time, the land on which it sat had been purchased by Elisha Chissum. . . ." Jesse and Judah Dodson Posted by: Richard Dale Dotson Date: July 28, 2001.

Seeking information on Jesse Dodson, son of Thomas Dodson. Jesse`s wife Judah(Judith) daughter of George and Phoebe Combs of Halifax, Va. Jesse and Judah were married on 19 Mar. 1793 in Halifax, Va. They migrated first to Warren Co, Tn then to White Co, Tn by 1818. Would like to know also their children names and birth dates. This might be my lost Dodson branch. Thank you...RDD

One of the executors of his will was David N. Dodson. No doubt they were kin but I have no idea in what way. Rev. David N. Dodson married Mary Campbell, 17 April 1828, Hickman County, Kentucky. Lewis S. Lee

Toby, Thank you for your post. I have removed the middle initial for Jesse Dodson. I have added additional sources from land deeds to prove his relationship to his father Thomas Dodson. Specifically the following deed: Deed Jesse Dodson to Galen R Elliott: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS4F-4SB3-F: Citing: Puluski County, Kentucky Deed Book 3 (1815-1819) pages 68 & 69; which states in the deed: ". . . the said Jesse Dodson doth hereby acknowledge have granted bargained & sold and by these presents doth grant bargain & sell unto the said Galen R Elliott his heirs and assigns the following tract of land (to wit) three eights of a tract of land lying and being in the County of Pulaski adjoining the town Somerset, the one eight part of said tract of land devised to the said Jesse Dodson by his father Thomas Dodson Dec'd as heir at law to his son William Dodson Dec'd by whom the said tract of land was entered, surveyed & patented, the other eights conveyed to the said Jesse Dodson by Alexander Hittson & Samuel Dodson two of the Legatees of said Thomas Dodson Dec'd said tract of land originally contained two hundred acres with all and singular the appurtenances to the said piece or parcel of land (supposed to be about one hundred & fifty acres) belonging or in wise appertuning, and all the right title and interest of him the said Jesse Dodson . . . "

I have also included the text of the deed in Jesse's biography where Jesse Dodson purchased the interest in the land.

Jesse Dodson is supposed to have married Judah/Judith Combs on the 19th of March 1793 in Halifax County, Virginia. Big Spring Baptist Church in Claiborne County, Tennessee record that Judah and Jesse Dodson were members in 1801, so it is possible and very likely that during this 8 years of marriage Judah was the mother of some of Jesse Dodson's children.

Carol, thank you very much for your hard work and excellent improvements to Dr. Jesse's profile. The records involving Second Fork Thomas' son William's estate are a huge help to understanding this family. I have never been able to find any children of what I believe is Jesse's first marriage (i.e., to Judith Combs), so that is why my current hypothesis is that they were childless and that his first children were born to Nancy Wyatt, whom he married in Hardin Co., KY 8 Apr 1806. My 3GGF was his presumably eldest son Samuel J. Dodson (1810-99), followed by Mary Phoebe, Jesse John, Thomas B., Frances, William Pinckney, and Fidelity T. Dodson. Elizabeth Hardin (b. 1805), whom I believe was Dr. Jesse's third wife, was much younger and gave him four children: James Hardin, Joseph H., Thomas C. (the name Thomas is repeated, so this may be in error, or maybe the earlier son Thomas had died young?), and Elizabeth Dodson. Getting through this brick wall and learning my Samuel J. Dodson's biological mother is very important to me. After that, I will deal with the doubts about Jesse's father. Some think he was the son of George Dodson, brother of Second Fork Thomas, so it is all very entangled. Thank you again.

The deeds left by Thomas (Second Fork) Dodson are about the only proof of Jesse being his son you will find as Thomas left no will or estate records as he had distributed all of his estate to his children before his death, if fact the first distribution was before the death of his son William Dodson. The following deed mentions the first distribution and the distribution of the estate Thomas received from the death of his son William. This is all included in the biography of Thomas (Second Fork) Dodson here on WikiTree.

Thomas made a Deed of Gift in March, 1811, to his children. This deed of gift was the property which Thomas received as heir-at-law of his deceased son, William Dodson. The deed was proved by witnesses, J. McConally and Caleb Witt, at the November, 1811 session of court in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Thomas' Deed of Gift reads as follows: "Thomas Dodson to his children viz: 27th April 1811 To all whom these shall come Greeting know ye that whereas by the Death of my son William Dodson I hereby became heir at Law to his goods chattles and Heriditaments as will real as personable and whereas my son Samuel hath administered on said estate at my special request and as soon as said estate can be duly brought forward in Legal Order it is my desire and earnest request that this said estate shall be disposed of as followeth to wit that whereas in January in the year eighteen hundred & six I relinquished all my own estate to my children and by a bond then given to me by same of children wherein they were bound to maintain me during life and whereas the above estate has fell into my hands since the above mentioned year eighteen hundred & six as I then did I now think it my duty to bestow on the aforesaid children to wit William Johnson, James Johnson Stephen Johnson Jesse Dodson and Samuel Dodson a compensation for their trouble and expense in my maintenance as mentioned in the aforesaid bond alluded to: know ye that I hereby relinquish and forever here after give up all my right title claim interest & demand of the estate aforesaid disanuling all and everything heretofore made done or acted by me or to be made done or acted on for future of my maintenance in the names following I give to the said Wm Johnson & Stephen Johnson Jesse & Samuel Dodson one hundred dollars a piece for their maintaining me during my natural life extrordinary and the remands of the above estate to be equally divided among my children here mentioned viz: William James, Stephen Johnson, Rhoda Hitts, Thomas Dodson heirs, James Dodson and the aforesaid Jesse and Samuel Dodson except one lot in the town of Polaskia [sic] extrordinary for his special services to said Samuel Dodson and now be it known to all that I the said Thomas Dodson do from this day forward forever given up relinquish and resign all my claim to said estate to the use and behalf of the persons herein specified in testamony whereof I have hereunto set my seal on the twenty third day March eighteen hundred and eleven [signed] Thomas his X mark Dodson

I actually am confident that Second Fork Thomas was Dr. Jesse's father, but with all the many misattributed trees that I have encountered indicating Dr. Jesse's father was George Dodson, I still find myself second-guessing it. Hopefully, with WikiTree's prominence in the search engines, and with thanks to the documentary help you are giving, those misattributions will keep resolving into the truth. This may already be reflected in the concurring trees that feed AncestryDNA's ThruLines where it shows, at least in my own case, 60+ fellow descendants of Second Fork Thomas and Mary Neville matching me. Good data is pushing out the bad. I am a good match with descendants of Samuel J., Mary P., Jesse John, and William Pinckney Dodson, but not with any of the other kids, known or unknown.

I have a new wrinkle for you - I found the following wife named "Charity" when Jesse sold land in 1824: Jesse sold to Thomas Lee on the 27th of April 1824, for three hundred dollars a quarter section of land in the state of Illinois that had been originally granted to Joseph James. Jesse's wife, Charity waived her dower rights, which reads in part as follows: ". . . State of Kentucky Hickman County I Ben Barner clerk of the county court for the county aforesaid, do hereby certify that Jesse Dodson and Charity his wife, parties to the within deed personally appeared before me this day and acknowledged the same to be their act and deed, she the said Charity Dodson being examined by me seperately, privily and apart from her said husband, and the said deed was then and there shown and fully explained to her and upon such privy examination she declared that she did freely and willingly relinquish her right of dower to the land and premises therein contained without the treats or persuasion of her said husband, that that she was willing the same should be admitted to record In Testimony that I have recorded the same together with this certificate I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of my said office to be hereunto affixed the 29th day of April in the year 824 and in the 32nd year of the Commonwealth Ben Barner CLC CC" - Source: Deed Dodson to Lee: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSKH-89JK-Y; Citing: Hickman County, Kentucky Deed Book A, page 37

Also, it appears Jesse's last wife Elizabeth was not too pleased with what Jesse left her in the will as she filed the following renunciation in February, 1840: Elizabeth Dodson on the 29th of February, 1840 filed the following renunciation of Jesse's will and her intent to claim her third or dower interest in the estate. The renunciation reads as follows: "Know all men by these presents that I Elizabeth Dodson widow of Jesse Dodson deceased have this day and by these presents do hereby renounce and surrender all the claim interest right and benefit which I have or may have in under or by the last will and testament of the said Jesse Dodson my deceased husband in and to all property either real or personal devised to me by said will and do hereby declare that I will not hold under the will aforesaid or anything bequeathed or devised to me in or by said will and that henceforth I will claim and demand my third or dowery of both real and personal estate of my deceased husband according to law In Testimony of which I have hereunto set my hand affixed my seal this 29th of Febuary[sic] 1840 [signed] Elizabeth Dodson Signed sealed and delivered in presence of WH Husbern & Ann her X mark Smith, J.S. Hardin State of Kentucky Hickman County I WH H Taylor Clerk of the County Court for the County aforesaid certify that is renunciation from Elizabeth Dodson to the last will and testament of Jesse Dodson dec'd was produced to me in my office on the 4th day of May 1840 and acknowledged by the said Elizabeth Dodson to be her act and deed and requested to be recorded whereupon the foregoing renunciation to the will of Jesse Dodson dec'd together with this certificate hath been duly admitted to record in my office given under my hand this 10th day of September 1840 [signed] W H H Taylor Clk" - Source: Renunciation of Elizabeth Dodson; https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSKH-Z39Z-S; Citing: Hickman County, Kentucky Deed Book D (1839-1840) page 398

I have a few more deeds to add but they are all in a later time frame and Elizabeth R. Dodson is the wife releasing her dower in the later deeds.

That is an industrial strength wrinkle! Wow. Thank you for this and for Elizabeth's renunciation of the will. I have NEVER heard of Charity. That would be a probable fourth wife then. Maybe she was the widow of Joseph James.

"[...] all that tract or quarter Section of land which is designated and known on the Map of the Military bounty lands in the State of Illinois by the North Western quarter of Section thirty four of township five north in range six West containing one hundred & Sixty acres granted to Joseph James by a Patent from the President of the United States on the 20 day of April one thousand eight hundred and eighteen..."

ALSO: This is possibly interesting. From the Combs family website. http://www.combs-families.org/combs/records/va/halifax/

"08 Sep 1818 (White Co TN Deed Abstracts, Volume F, p. 255) Bill of Sale 8 Sept 1818 Thomas YATES, Jesse DADSAN (?), and Polly HAMLETT to Berry HAMLITT, $300 paid by HAMLITT, grant him the power to bring suit against James CHAMBERS to recover a Negro woman and her increase named CHARITY, who formerly belonged to Estate of George Combs of Halifax Co, VA, which woman was formerly owned by Phebe Combs (widow of George Combs), above named Grantors being heirs of sd. George. Wit: John CATRON, Henry LYDA, William CHISM, Archibald CONNOR. (White Co, TN Deed Abstracts, Vols. A-F, Murry)

"Notes: Jesse DODSON, Bolling HAMBLETT and Thos. YATES all married daus of George & Phebe Combs and all were in White Co TN by 1818. Phoebe Combs may have removed to that county as well (See 1828 White Co, TN Records)."

Dr. Jesse Dodson's parentage is my greatest brick wall. I have invested more time and effort on this one question than any other. First, there is no reason to believe he had a middle name. Dr. Jesse Dodson did have a son AND a grandson named "Jesse J. Dodson," but that is not HIS name. Second, there is no evidence that Judith/Judah Combs is the mother of ANY of his children. DNA may prove it, but it's also possible that Dr. Jesse Dodson's wife Nancy Wyatt was the mother of at least some of his children. My own autosomal DNA results show some indication of descent from Nancy's parents, James Wyatt and Lucy Martin. Also, the reference above to a "Jesse Dodson" being bound out to "John Spitfatham" of Hampshire Co., VA is not related in any way to Dr. Jesse Dodson, who is my 4GGF.

Dodson-139 and Dodson-5203 appear to represent the same person because: Both men have the same name, place of birth and parents. Both men married the same woman and died in the same place. They need to be merged to remove duplicate profiles.
