Biography

Elisabeth (Betty) Dodson and her twin sister Sarah were born the 27th of May 1732 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond county, Virginia. Elisabeth's birth name is given in the North Farnham Parish Registers only as "Betty". The North Farnham Parish Registers records the birth as follows: "Dodson, Sarah and Betty, twins, daughters of Thomas and Elizabeth Dodson, born 27 May 1732." Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Dodson Jr. and Elizabeth Rose.[1]

Elisabeth married John Bennett sometime before or around 1749 in Virginia. No marriage record has been located.

Elisabeth and her husband John were living in Pittsylvania county, Virginia before 1782 as John appears in the 1782 land tax list for Pittsylvania County, Virginia with 180 acres. [2]

Elisabeth's husband John made his last will and testament on the 11th of November 1782 in Pittsylvania county, Virginia. John's will reads in part as follows: "In the name of God Amen I John Bennett of the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia Planter being very sick and weak in body, but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God calling to mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that is appointed for all men once to die Do make & ordain this my last will and testament. . . . as to touching such worldly Estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form, first I lend to my well beloved wife Elisabeth Bennett all and singular my whole estate both movable and immovable during her life. Item I give and bequeath to my son Jesse Bennett one hundred acres of land with my plantation to be possessed by him after his mothers death. Item I give and bequeath to my son William Bennett the half of Negro Peters value Item I give and bequeath the other half the said negroes value to be equally divided between my four children, John Bennett, Elisabeth Bennett, Jesse Bennett and Ruth Bennett & I desire the said William Bennett to possess the said negroe upon paying the other said children their part. Item I give and bequeath all the rest of my effects to be equally divided between my nine children William Bennett, Thomas Bennett, John Bennett, Jesse Bennett, Sarah Lee, Winifred McDaniel, Milley Watson, Elisabeth Bennett & Ruth Bennett. I do likewise constitute make and ordain William Bennett and Thomas Bennett my sons Executors of this my last will and testament, and I do hereby uttlerly disallow and disannual all and every former testaments wills & legacies, bequests & Executors by me in any ways before named willed and bequeathed satisfying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal this Eleventh day of November ano Dom one thousand seven hundred and eighty two. [signed] John his + mark Bennett

Signed sealed & published pronounced and declared by the within named John Bennett this then to be his last will and testament in the presence of us who in his presence and the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed out names, George Dodson, Rotherick McDaniel, John Bennett
At a Court held for Pittsylvania county the 18th day of July 1791 the within last will and testament of John Bennett deceased was exhibited into court by William Bennett one of the Executors herein named and proved by the oath of one of the witnesses hereto, and ordered to be certified and on the motion of the said William Bennett as Eldest son and heir at law of the said Testator being first sworn, Certificate is granted him for obtaining Letters of Administration of all and singular the goods & chattels rights and credits of the said testator which was of the said testator at the time of his death with this will annexed on his giving security, whereupon he together with John Wilson and William Madding his securities entered into bond as the law directs and acknowledged the same and afterwards to wit at a court held for the said county the 20th day of February 1797 the said will was further proved agreeable to law and ordered to be recorded by the court."[3]

Elisabeth Dodson and John Bennett were the parents of the following children based on the Will of John Bennett:

William Bennett
Thomas Bennett
John Bennett
Jesse Bennett
Sarah Bennett Lee
Winifred Bennett McDaniel
Milley Bennett Watson
Elisabeth Bennett
Ruth Bennett

Elisabeth died sometime after 1791 and before 1797 when the last of her husband's land was sold. Elisabeth's exact date and place of death are currently unknown. It is likely she remained in Pittsylvania county, Virginia with her children. Note: some Ancestry sites give Elisabeth's date of death as 21 July 1794, and burial in Chapel Hill, Sequatchie, Tennessee. However, it should be noted the town of Chapel Hill Tennessee was not founded until 1849, and Sequatchie County, Tennessee was not created until 1857, from Hamilton County, Tennessee. Hamilton County, Tennessee was not created until 1819 from parts of Rhea County and Cherokee Indian Lands. It is unlikely Elisabeth died and was buried in Tennessee.

Dodson-291 and Dodson-206 appear to represent the same person because: Both women have the same name and same dates and place of birth. Both women are married to the same John Bennett.

Dodson-206 has a more complete biography with sources.

The date and place of death for Elisabeth Dodson-291, in 1794; has no sources and is very likely wrong as Sequatchie county, Tennessee was not formed until the 9th of December 1857, from Hamilton county, Tennessee. Hamilton county, Tennessee was not formed until 25 October 1819. Hamilton county, Tennessee was created as the result of a treaty with the Cherokee Indians in 1817. It is likely Elisabeth remained in Pittsylvania county, Virginia as a large number of her children remained in the county.

These two women are the same women and should be merged to eliminate duplicates and to facilitate future mergers of duplicate children.
