Biography

James Wilson Dodson was born 14 February 1837, in Jasper County, Georgia.[1] James was the son of Joel Warnock Dodson and Elvira Willson (Wilson).

James, age 13, appears in the 1850 Federal census in Chambers county, Alabama in the household of his father, Joel Dodson.[2]

James married on 13 October 1859, Eliza Delano Robinson, the daughter of Milas J. Robinson and Nancy Martin.[3]

James appears in the 1860 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama as head of household. James' household appears as follows: James age 23 and Elizah age 19.[4]

James' physical description from his Civil War enlistment papers is: height 5 foot 7 inches, light hair, fair complexion and blue eyes.[5]

James enlisted in the Civil War in 1861 as a Private in Co. E, 44th Alabama Infantry Regiment. James obtained the rank of 4th Sergeant on 31 December 1862. James was wounded at the battle of Second Manassas in the left eye which left him blind in his left eye. James also fought at Suffolk and in the battle of Gettysburg. James was captured at Chicamauga on 19 September 1863, and was sent to the prisoner of war camp at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois. James was discharged from Camp Douglas on 13 June 1865.[6]

James appears as head of household in the 1870 Federal census in Tallapoosa county, Alabama. James' household appears as follows: James age 32; Eliza age 28; Wafer age 10; Thomas age 8; Henry age 4; and Nannie age 1.[7]

James appears as head of household in the 1880 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama. James' household appears as follows: James W. age 43; Eliza D. age 39; Wafer age 20; James T. age 18; John H. age 14; Nancy D. age 11; Oscar D. age 9; Juliett E. age 6; Martha E. age 5; and Ora J. age 2.[8]

James appears as head of household in the 1900 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama. James' household appears as follows: James W. age 63; Eliz D. age 58; Martha E. age 24; Frank M. age 19; and Ophelia age 17.[9]

James appears as head of household in the 1910 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama. James' household appears as follows: James age 73; Eliza age 60; and Martha age 30.[10]

James died on 26 July 1918, Shelby County, Alabama. James is buried at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery, Chelsea, Shelby County, Alabama.
