The Cemetery Stone Memorial for Lazurus Dodson shows birth and death dates of 1760 and 1826. The stone memorial looks new. It is located in Cottrell Cemetery, Harrogate, Claiborne County, Tennessee. The Find A Grave website Memorial states that he was born in Virginia and died at Claiborne County, Tennessee. We can probably conclude that his body rests in he Cottrell Cemetery.[1]
Lazarus Dodson was the subject of research discussed by Roberta Estes in her blog "DNAeXplained - Genetic Genealogy"[2] In her blog Estes states He lived with his family near Rogersville, Hawkins, TN USA; later as a farmer near Cumberland Gap, Claiborne Co. TN; appears to have been in Sullivan Co. NC for a time.
We know from public information on the DAR website[3], that Lazarus Dodson is a DAR Revolutionary Ancestor and that his service in the Revolutionary War and his basic biography has been researched. The public details about Lazaruson this website are that:
In a Tennessee deeds refererence[5], Names of his sons and possibly a son-in-law are given as: William, David, Oliver, Eligha (sic), Lazarous Jr., Jesse, and brother-in-law Abner Lea .
In Claiborne County, Tennessee, Court Minutes[6] dated Tuesday, August 10, 1819 the court records that A Deed of conveyance from Abner Lea & Lasrus Dodson Sen[o]r to William Hagen for Six hundred and forty acres of Land was duly acknowledged in court by the makers thereof admitted to record and ordered to be Registered"
[a copy of the directions for disbursement of his Will is included in the article entitled Revolutionary War Veteran p.21 Dodson-3592] He had substantial land at Cumberland Gap as a result of a voucher he received for his service during the Revolutionary War.[2] [7]
[The William-Lucas DODSON/DOTSON book only names two children for Lazarus Dodson-811: Elijah and Oliver. They do suggest others they feel were children.
On RootsWeb World Connect Project Gloria Herbert, a Dodson family searcher lists eight children but it varies from other lists I have seen. Her list is Jesse 1780, Jehu 1782, Martin 1784, James 1786, Elijah 1787, David 1792, Oliver 1794, Lazarus Jr 1795. Sources for this list don't spell out how it was compiled. Another source Roberta Estes, in her research of Lazarus points out that it is highly likely that Mary the wife of Abner Lea may very well be Lazarus Sr.'s daughter. Ms. Estes lists Lazarus Jr., Oliver, Jesse, David, William L., and Elijah. She mentions Jehu and Martin on p34 but seems uncertain if they were children of Lazarus Sr.] The Dodson Book suggests a James as a son of Lazarus also.[7]
It's known that Lazarus's wife was Jane according to the death entry of their son, Lazarus. https://dna-explained.com/2017/01/08/jane-dodson-c1760-18301840-pioneer-wife-on-5-frontiers-52-ancestors-142/
