Biography

Lucy Dodson was born the 23rd of February, 1781, in Halifax county, Virginia. Lucy was the daughter of Caleb Dodson and Elizabeth Petty.

Lucy married the widower George Dodson, son of Lazarus Dodson, on the 18th of December, 1803, in Halifax county, Virginia.^[1]

Lucy is named as a daughter of Caleb Dodson in his last will and testament as follows: "In the name of God Amen I Caleb Dodson Senr of the county of Halifax and state of Virginia being old and infirm in body, but of sound mind and memory do constitute this my last will and testament disannulling and disavowing all other wills made by me but this alone. . . . Item 5th I lend to my daughter Lucey Dodson one negroe man named Harry as Harry is deemed not so valuable as man Jerry. It is my request that the difference in valuation be made to her and to go to her children after her death, the horse which I gave her at her marriage and which I suppose @ to be worth fifty dollars to be deducted out of the difference of the value of the two slaves before mentioned. . . . lastly I do hereby appoint my son Elisha Dodson & my son in law Robert M. Ferrell my Executors hoping they will see the same faithfully executed Given under my hand and seal this 23th day of May 1832 [signed] Caleb Dodson . . . ^[2]

Widow

Applied as widow for husband's bounty land 4/19/1855 said they were married by Elias Dodson a Baptist preacher, and her name was Dodson before she married. Stephen and Elisha Dodson signed her affadavit.

Widow Lucy Dodson, widow of George Dodson, made application in Pittsylvania County VA for pension for her husband's service in a company of the Pittsylvania Militia.^[9]
