Archibald was the son of George Douglas[1][2] and Isabel (Sibbald) Douglas[3] born between Jun and Nov 1449.[1] He became the 5th Earl Angus at age fourteen[1] and later earned the nickname ;'Bell the Cat.'[2]

He married Elizabeth Boyd, daughter of Robert Boyd,[4] 1st Lord Boyd, Great Chamberlain of Scotland and Mariota Maxwell, on 4 March 1468. Elizabeth died before 1498 with issue of four sons and three daughters:[4]

  2. Sir William of Glenbervie, d. 9 Sep 1513
  3. Gavin, Bishop of Dunkfield b. c 1474, d. Sep 1522

  7. Janet, m. Andrew Herries on 25 Nov 1495, d. b 25 Feb 1500

He married Janet Kennedy, daughter of John Lord Kennedy on in 1498.[4] The marriage was either never completely enacted or somehow ended as he married Katherine Stirling, daughter of Sir William Stirling, 2nd Laird of Keir and Margaret Crichton, on or about 1 June 1500. They separated or divorced in 1512.[2]

He died towards the end of October 1513 at Whithorn, Wigtownshire, aged about sixty-four.[5][2]

Research Notes

"Archibald 'Bell the Cat' Douglas, 5th Earl Angus died between 29 November 1513 and 31 January 1514 at Priory of Whithorn." Not sure where that came from...saving.

A contract for the marriage of Archibald 'Bell the Cat' Douglas, 5th Earl Angus and Janet Kennedy was signed before 20 July 1498.[6] [7]

Norman Macdougall in James IV covers the relationship between both Archibald Douglas and James IV and he's very clear that Janet Kennedy never married Archibald Douglas, both describing her as his mistress and explicitly saying they were not married. [8]
