Biography

Maldred MacCrínán, Lord Of Carlisle & Allerdale. Born in 1005 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland.Was Regent of Strathclyde 1034. Father: Crínán of Dunkeld (died 1045) Lay abbot of Dunkeld, called "The Thane". Crínán was killed in a battle at Dunkeld. Mother: Bethóc, eldest daughter of Máel Coluim mac Cináeda, Malcollm II of Scotland, who had no surviving sons. Crínán, Abbot of Dunkeld and Bethóc eldest son, Donnchad I, ascended to the throne of Scotland around 1034.

Maldred was King of the Cumbrians in the year 1034 (New Douglas Peerage, vol. iii, p. 241.) His kingdom included Strathclyde and the Lennox. (Robertson's "Scotland Under Her Early Kings," vol. ii, Footnote pp. 37.1 and 495.)

He married. Ealdgith,^[1] or Algitha, daughter of Uchtred, Earl of Northumberland, by his wife Elgifu, or Elgiva, daughter of Ethelred II, King of England. (Sim. de Obsess, Dun:, Skene's "Celtic Scotland" (1876), vol. I, p. 344, Footnote 18.)
And had two sons:

Ealdgyth seems to have married twice, first to Maldred Lord Of Carlisle & Allerdale and later married a 2nd time to Alfgar III Earl of Mercia, by whom she had several children.

An Ulkil, son of Maldred, appears as a witness to charters by Cospatric, brother of Dolfin, before 1138.(2-241) They may have been cousins."

Maldred was probably killed in the same battle in which his father was slain, in the year 1045.

Crinán's second son, Maldred of Allerdale, held the title of Lord of Cumbria. It is said that from him, the Earls of Dunbar, for example Patrick Dunbar, 9th Earl of Dunbar, descend in unbroken male line.

m ([before 1040]) EALDGYTH [Ælfgifu], daughter and heiress of UHTRED Earl of Northumbria & his third wife Ælfgifu of England (1016 or before-). Simeon of Durham names "Algiva daughter of earl Uchtred [and] of Algiva daughter of king Agelred" when recording that her father arranged her marriage to "Maldred the son of Crinan"[380], although her father was long since dead when she married. Named daughter of Uhtred and Elgiva by Roger of Hoveden, who also names her husband and his father[381].

Lord Maldred & his wife had four children:

1. GOSPATRICK ([1040/48]-[1075]). Simeon of Durham names "Cospatric son of Maldred son of Crinan" when recording that he was appointed Earl of Northumberland[382]. Earl of Northumberland from Dec 1067.

Maldred, Lord of Allerdale was born circa 1015 at Dunbar, Scotland.3 He was the son of Crinan, Mormaer of Atholl and Bethoc of Scotland.2 He married Ealdgyth (?), daughter of Uhtred, Earl of Northumberland and Ælfgifu (?), circa 1036.3 He died in 1045, killed in action, while attempting to avenge the murder of his brother by Macbeth.2

Maldred, Lord of Allerdale gained the title of Lord of Allerdale [Feudal].4 He held the office of Regent of the Kingdom of Strathclyde between 1034 and 1045.2

We know of Maldred from the book "Records of the Heath Family", 1913 by George Heath. The entry reads as follows:

Maldred, son of "Crinan the Thane," was born about 1004, and married, about 1030, Aldgitha, daughter of Uchtred, Earl of Northumberland and granddaughter of AEthelred, King of England, who was the great-great- grandson of Alfred, King of England. Maldred's successors were, therefore, directly descended from Alfred the Great. Maldred was brother, as well as neighbour, of "the gracious Duncan," who was King of Cumbria for about sixteen years before he succeeded his maternal grandfather, Malcolm II as King of Scotland on the 25th November, 1034.

He had three sons: (1) Gospatric, who succeeded him; (2) Robert, Prior of Hexham; and (3) Uchtred, also Prior of Hexham.

Maldred died about 1066.

Crínán of Dunkeld (died 1045) was the lay abbot of the diocese of Dunkeld, and perhaps the Mormaer of Atholl. Crínán was progenitor of the House of Dunkeld, the dynasty who would rule Scotland until the later 13th century.

Crinán was married to Bethoc, daughter of King Malcolm II of Scotland (reigned 1005-1034). As Malcolm II had no son, the strongest hereditary claim to the Scottish throne descended through Bethóc, and Crinán's eldest son Donnchad I (reigned 1034-1040), became King of Scots. Some sources indicate that Malcolm II designated Duncan as his successor under the rules of tanistry because there were other possible claimants to the throne.

Maldred is the younger son; his illigitimate male line still exists in the family of Dunbar. He was Lord of Carlisle and Allendale. He and Ealdgith are given as parents of Gospatrick by "The Prescott Family of America," Doris Cline Ward (2nd Ed., 1977). Maldred mac Crínán was brother of Duncan I, King of Scots, also our ancestor.

Maldred married Ealdgyth of Northumberland, daughter of Uhtred "the Bold", Earl of Northumbria and Ælfgifu of Wessex, before 1040.

Maldred was present when Duncan was slain by his cousin Macbeth on 14 August 1040 near Elgin, Moray, Scotland. Macbeth had joined forces with the invading Northmen.

Maldred was placed on the throne of Scotland by Siward, Earl of Northumbria, in 1045, but he was slain in battle during that year at the age of 40; he was attempting to avenge the murder of his brother by Macbeth.
