| Alwyn the Younger (Lennox) Lennox Second Earl of Lennox was an inhabitant of Medieval Scotland. Join: Scotland Project Discuss: Scotland |
Alwyn was the son and heir of Alwin, first earl of Lennox. His father, "Alwin the elder, Earl of Lennox," was named in his charters. Alwin succeeded his father as the second Earl of Lennox, and styled himself as 'son and heir of Alwin, Earl of Lennox,' and by his son Máel Domnaig (Maldoven) as 'Alwin, younger, Earl of Lennox, son and heir of Alwin, elder, Earl of Lennox.'[1][2] It is accepted that Alwyn was a minor when David, brother of King William, was granted the earldom while Alwyn was a ward of the Crown. The date of this charter is estimated to be between 1178 and 1182, putting Alwyn's birth roughly 1160 or after.[3]
He was a benefactor of the Church.[4] He donated lands to the Church of Kilpatrick,[5] and lands of Luss to Malduin, Dean of Lennox.[6]
He was called Mormaer of the Levenax in the Gaelic poem celebrating his coming of age, but Earl of Lennox in contemporary charters.[4]
Alwyn died between 1208 and 4 December 1214 when his son Maldoven was styled earl of Lennox.[1][7]
He married Eva, daughter of Gilchrist, Earl of Menteith, and had a large family of nine sons.[4]
