John was a Baptist minister and was chaplain of Company M Second Maine Cavalry[9] during the Civil War. He enlisted in the regular cavalry[10]--he felt it more patriotic--and served as chaplain when needed. He was for two years a soldier in the war.[11] See research notes--Civil War records previously located.

According to the Free Baptist Cyclopaedia published in 1889, Rev. John Dyer, was converted in March, 1838; in 1858 was licensed; in 1867 was ordained. He was pastor of the churches at Plantation, Dyer Brook, and New Limerick, where he lived, all of which he assisted in organizing. In 1886 failing health compelled him to relinquish his pastorate at Dyer Brook, which he had held for a few months.[12] This disability is listed in the 1880 census when John had moved in to his daughter's household.[13]

In the 1870 census John (age 50) was the head of household in Linneus, Aroostook, Maine, United States.[14]

At the time of the 1880 census, John and his wife were living in the household of his daughter Florence Dyer Ingraham and her husband. John, age 60, is listed as a Clergyman. [15]

John was mentioned on a memorial in New Limerick Cemetery, New Limerick, Aroostook County, Maine, United States with a death date of 1894. The inscription reads "Father" for John, and "Mother" for Matilda.[18]
