OLD YORK STREET
(An excerpt from a 1907 Maine Historical Society publication)
"An Old Gentleman's memory goes back to this vicinity as it was 50 years ago."
"That portion of York Street between Park and Danforth Streets has changed less in appearance during the past 50 years" said one of the older residents of that locality to an Express reporter a few days ago, "than any other section of the city that I know of." Of course there have been many changes and buildings have been built and others removed during that time, but the general appearance is about the same as it was when I was a boy and played tag with the boys and girls around what we called ARTHUR DYER's corner.
"Mr. Dyer kept a store in the second building from the corner of Brackett St. on the southeast side of the street and for many years his grocery and the grocery opposite, kept by Mr. William T. Morris, were the principal trading places in that vicinity.
"Mr Dyer lived in a house next down the street .....
"Stephen Dyer, a brother (P.C.Dyer's note: perhaps a cousin 1-2-7-4-4-1-5?) of Arthur, also lived on York Street in the next house to his brother. ....."
