Biography

Charles Alvin Dyer was born on Oct 21, 1840 in Portland, Cumberland, Maine, United States, son of James Dyer (1799–1874) and Lucy Woodbury Cushing (1805–1897).

Charles married Clara Louisa Brown on Dec 1, 1870 in Portland. Their known children were:

1. Lucy Ann Dyer (1873–1877)
2. James Franklin Dyer (1876–1924)

Charles died on Sep 19, 1912 in Portland, aged 71. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, Maine.

Charles A. Dyer, the veteran fish packer died at his home on Hampshire Street early this morning after an illness that has been hopeless from the first. (He died from cancer of the liver, Veteran's Burial Card) He is survived by a widow who is a prominent member of a number of societies and clubs besides being an artist of much more than common ablility. He also leaves one son, James F. Dyer, a lawyer in Providence, R.I., who was a former football player on the Portland High School team.

Mr. Dyer was the great Maine as well as Portland authority regarding mackerel, and when the business was at its height the firm of C. A. Dyer & Co. handled two-thirds of the pack of Portland and more than half of that of Maine. Mr. Dyer was also a writer of some ability and wrote much on the side of the fisheries of the United States, when the controversy with Canada growing out of the bait question was at its height. He came from of an old Portland family, one honorably indentified with the building up of the merchant marine and fisheries of Maine, and will long be remembered for the part he took in the developing and for many years maintaining of the fisheries of the State.

There is not one mention of his service in the Civil War or his wife's name. His address of Hampshire Street is on his veteran's burial card. Now we know who James was. This obit was in the Portland Evening Express & Advertiser, Friday, Sept. 20, 1912. He died Sept. 19, 1912. Buried in Evergreen, Sept. 21, 1912. His death notice says: Dyer-In Portland, Sept. 19, Charles A. Dyer, aged 71 years. Funeral services Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Wilde Memorial Chapel, Evergreen Cemetery.
