Notes

Note: Vinalhaven historical society one of the early settlers on the island, b. 17 July 1737 Truro,
Mass, son of William and Elizabeth Smalley. Children: Nathaniel, Sr.; William b. ?, (m. 1797), others?
This must have been the William Dyer who went to Fox Islands, about ten miles east of Rockland, on the coast of Maine. These two islands were incorporated, in 1789, as the town of Vinalhaven; in 1844, the northern island was set off as North Haven.
Tradition has it that William Dyer was born in Marshfield, Plymouth, Mass.; investigation, however, shows that not a person by the name of Dyer appears in the town or church records of Marshfield, or in the county records as "of Marshfield." The name of the wife of William Dyer is not remembered; it is possible that he married into a Marshfield family, as did his brother Anthony. A part of the lot upon which William Dyer settled, some time before the Revolution, is now North Haven village. "His occupation was farming and fishing, and he is said to have been an expert in shooting sea-fowl." The number of children in his family is not known; his son Nathaniel6 lived and died in North Haven. It is said of his family that they "were all large men, some of them weighing 250 pounds." [Genealogy of Edward Small (The Dyer Family)]
NEHGR 105:205; US CENSUS 1800; Vinalhaven, Maine, Hancock Co.; NOTE: Family with 4 males, 3 females including 1 male over 45. Came from Portland, Maine.
US CENSUS 1790 - Maine, Hancock Co., Vinalhaven; NOTE: Family with 2 males 16 or over, 3 males < 16, 3 females.
Brothers Anthony Dyer & Benjamin Dyer are found in 1790 Census in Vinalhaven.
