Biography

Mark Eames immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
  • "Mark Eames (c1617-1693) Mark was born in Fordington about 1617(32) when baptism registers are missing... He emigrated in 1633 with his parents to Charlestown moving with them to Hingham in 1636. He and his father were granted land in Hingham in 1645. He was married there on the 26 May 1648 to Elizabeth Andrews and they had their first child John Eames baptised in Marshfield Plymouth Colony on 6th September 1649...The following year he bought a house there with his father...Mark became a Deputy to the General Court in 1662 and held this post for fourteen of the next 20 years...He served as an ensign and later as a lieutenant in the militia during King Philip’s Indian War (1675-1676) and was second in command under Captain Peregrine White whom history books credit as being the first white child to be born in New England, having been born on the Mayflower a month after the ship arrived."
  • "...the Will of Roger KETE a Gentleman who was buried at St Georges Church in Fordington on 5th June 1620. His will is dated 15 Mar 1619/20 and in it he makes a bequest to...Mark EAMES, Margery and Anthony's son is left forthy shillings in money, Roger Kete's under featherbed with a feather bolster. This was probably a truckle bed which was low down on rollers and during the daytime slid under the standing bedstead and although often used to sleep servants was perhaps also appropriate for a child. By the date he wrote his will Anthony and Margery had three children so Mark seems to have been favoured as the eldest son"
  • "On the 9 Apr 1620 Roger Kete added a codicil to his will leaving Mark additionally some spoons, but also appoints his father Anthony EAMES as one of three Overseers to ensure his executors carry out his will."
  • "Mark and Elizabeth appear to have had 11 children in all which i have not researched, although 5 are mentioned in his will. Mark died in Marshfield Massachusetts shortly after his Will was written on 12th Jul 1693 and he named Elizabeth as his executor. Administration papers however issued 19th October that year show that she died a few days before Mark."

Probate

Anthony Eames, son of Lieut Mark Eames was granted administration of his estate on 25 September 1693. His will is dated 12 July 1693 and proved on 25 September 1693 in Plymouth. He mentions his wife, Elizabeth, his sons, Jonathan, Anthony, and David, and his daughters, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary, Damaris Winslow, and Ruth. His wife was to be the executor of his will but died a few days before he died. The oldest son refused administration so Anthony was granted administration. His inventory was taken on 13 September 1693.[3]

On 24 November 1694, the probate court order mentions only Sarah (eldest daughter), Elizabeth Lane, and Damaris Winslow, but his estate to the daughters was to be divided equally between them.[4]

On 11 April 1699, it was recorded that mistakes were made and the remaining estate was divided between the five daughters, Sarah Eames, Elizabeth Lane, Damaria Winslow, Mary Stodder, and Ruth Eames.[5]
