Biography

Lettie Belle Ely was born on 17 Jan 1870[1] in Fayette, Howard, Missouri, United States. She was the fourteenth child of eighteen children born to William Ely and Susan Childers.
Her seventeen siblings were:
  1. Susan Ely (1852 - 1852)
  2. Simeon Morrison Ely (1852 - 1921)
  3. Infant Ely (1853 - 1853)
  4. Virginia Susan (Ely) Lane (1854 - 1884)
  5. Mary Elizabeth Ely (1854 - 1858)
  6. Belinda Frances (Ely) Henry (1856 - 1947)
  7. Lousia Jane (Ely) Simons (1857 - 1938)
  8. Barron Dekalb Ely (1859 - 1934)
  9. Nancy Victory Ely (1861 - 1861)
  10. William Jasper Ely (1862 - 1930)
  11. Saludia Cockrell (Ely) Killibrew (1866 - 1945)
  12. Rosalia Ann (Ely) Turner (1863 - 1947)

  14. Sarah Permelia (Ely) Aly (1872 - 1952)
  15. Martha Evaline (Ely) Killibrew (1873 - 1953)
  16. Ananias Ely (1875 - 1900)
  17. Helin Ross (Ely) Naylor (1877 - 1960)
Lettie married James Hiram Burrows (1862 - 1936) on July 4, 1888, in Midlothian, Texas.[2]
Our family attended many of the Burrow's Family Reunions in July at Lake Altus, Oklahoma. Altus has a humid subtropical climate and summers are very hot to sweltering. Altus can be among the hottest places in North America with record highs of 120 °F.[3] I listened and learned many things in the mornings but the afternoons, I spent in the cool waters of the Lake. Lettie ruled her family with an iron fist. It was "her way or the highway". She spoke her mind freely. I recall my grandmother, Elia Belle, saying more than once, Lettie can bless one out in just a few words and this person would thank Lettie for the conversation. Oh how I wished those genes had been passed on to me.
Regardless of relationship, Lettie called everyone "child". I suppose in her mind, being 1 of 18 children, having 12 children of her own and the large numbers of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, just calling everyone "child" made sense to her.[4]

Interesting Facts About This Burrows Family

When Lettie's first child, Elia Belle (Burrows) King, was born she weighed just a little over 1 pound. She was so tiny Lettie used handkerchiefs as diapers and a cigar box as her bed. I have some of Elia Belle's baby clothes; they are incredibly tiny. Elia lived to be 80 years old.[5]
Four of James' and Lettie's sons signed up for WWI draft. Three of these four sons signed up on the same day, 5 Jun 1917: William Hiram Burrows,[6], Simeon Jasper Burrows,[7] and Edgar Franklin Burrows[8]. Then on 12 Sep 1918 Hugh Newton Burrows[9] signed up. Hugh also signed up for WWII.[10]
Simeon Jasper Burrows declared an exception so he could stay home and care for his crippled wife.[7]
William Hiram Burrows was discharged on 29 Jul 1918 with a 25% disability. [11] He died on 11 Apr 1920.[12] Upon the probate of William’s Estate, James Hiram and Lettie Belle Burrows were awarded $2,043.12 compensation from the Bureau of War Risk Insurance.[13]
Edgar Franklin Burrows died 24 Sep 1918 while serving in the American Expeditionary Forces in France, where he passed away. [14][15] Edgar's body was shipped home from St. Nazaire on 1 Oct 1820 on the ship Pocahontas, arriving in Hoboken, New Jersey about 18 Oct 1820.[16]
Edgar had War Risk Insurance prior to going to Europe. When James Hiram Burrows' Will was probated about 26 Oct 1936, listed under Personal Property was "Insurance Due from Veterans Administration on the policy on the life of Edgar F. Burrows, $721.00 and Insurance Due from Veterans Administration on the policy on the life of William Hiram Burrows, $695.00."[17]
Lettie used the War Risk Insurance money to purchase a new car every three years. She gave one of her old cars to Elia Belle; Elia named that old Model T, Judy. Elia never had a legal driver's license. She paid a quarter for a driver's license but she never took her driving test. Her theory was, she paid for the license and she was going to drive...which she did.[18] I actually rode in that "Old Model T" with my grandmother, Elia Belle. She would drive me to the General Store in a little Texas town called Springlake.[19]
One summer, Lettie and my great grandfather took a sales trip (on a train sponsored by John Shary) to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas where they bought and transferred several pieces of property in Hidalgo County between 1920 - 1944 from John H. Shary.[20][21] James and Lettie allowed their daughter Sadie May and her spouse E. D. Teague to plant an orchard of grapefruit trees on this property. I remember getting a large box of "Ruby Reds" (grapefruits) from Sadie May every year. Only because Lettie made her send fruit to everyone in the family yearly. This was one of the ways Lettie ruled the family with an "Iron Fist".[19] Lettie later sold the property to E. D. and Sadie May (Burrows) Teague. [22]

Death and Burial

I remember traveling to Altus, Oklahoma on that hot and humid day when they called the family in to say their goodbyes. The only air conditioning we had in the car was 4 - 50. We rolled down all 4 windows and sped down the highway at 50 m.p.h.. I remember when we arrived at Lettie's home, she was in a small room off the kitchen (it was more like a large hallway with a bed tucked neatly in the corner). Lettie never was a large woman but as she lay there in her deathbed, she looked like a tiny little child all curled up in the fetal position in her dress. She always wore a shirt-waist dress. There was an open window and a fan whirling in an effort to keep the area cool.[19]
Lettie died on July 25, 1957 in Altus, Jackson, Oklahoma aged 87.[29]

Research Notes

Lettie belonged to an organization I believe was the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, she was very proud of that fact.Leger-741 13:19, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
Lettie told me more than once, “Child, do not trust the white man.” I never understood what she meant until I was older and my grandmother, Elia Belle, explained my great grandmother was part Cherokee Indian. My grandmother said her parents could have gotten land from the government if they would register on the Indian roles, but she would not register because she did not trust the white man and was afraid she would be put on Reservation. I have never been able to prove any Cherokee Indian lineage. I would like to lay that claim to rest one way or another.Leger-741 13:19, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi Justin,

I am participating in the PIP Voyage and with your permission I would like to use Lettie Belle as my second profile to improve. Here is a link that explains what the PIP Voyage is all about. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Profile_Improvements_Voyage I just completed my first PIP project and learned so much and really had fun doing it. The best part, that profile is so much better now than it was before. I would like to do the same with our shared ancestor. Let me know what you think. edited for typo
