Mary (Evans) Huxley was born in New South Wales, Australia
Mary Ann Evans was born on 23rd June 1806 in Lower Portland Head (now Ebenezer), in the Hawkesbury district of New South Wales (Australia). She waks the daughter of Richard Evans and Elizabeth Jackson, an emancipated convict. [1] She was christened on 23rd April 1817 in St Matthew's Church of England (now Anglicban Church), Windsor, New South Wales (the original timber construction). [2]
Mary married Thomas Huxley on 10th December 1822 in St Matthew's Church, Windsor (the present beautiful brick construction). [3] Between 1923 and 1848 at Lower Portland Head the couple had fourteen children.
Aged 53 years, she passed away on 17th December 1859 in Jerry's Plains, between Singleton and Muswellbrook in New South Wales' Upper Hunter Valley. She was buried in Jerry's Plains two days later. [4]
Research note
One family record has Mary as the daughter of John Arndell, an assistant surgeon on the First Fleet, and Elizabeth Jackson. [5] John returned to England soon afterward and died there in 1807. [6]
