Notes
Very little is known of Clara's early years. Elizabeth Weaver, her second oldest child, believes Clara's mother's family, the Behneys, came to the Pine Grove area during construction of the Schuylkill and Susquehanna (S&S) Railraod. That would have in the 1850s. The S&S ran from Auburn, in Eastern Schuylkill County through Pine Grove and Outwood, then along the Stony Creek Valley between Second and Sharp Mountains to Dauphin on the Susquehanna River, where it connected with Northern Central Railroad running north and south. It took about two hours to get from Pine Grove or Outwood to Harrisburg by train in the late 1800s. The S&S is the railroad that crossed the "High Bridge" across Mill Creek just west of Outwood. (Today the High Bridge is near the dam for the Lebanon Reservoir.) At one time the High Bridge was the longest span across a valley in the U.S. Before 1921 it was an all wood span. In 1921 concrete pillars were added. Today, the old S&S Railroad bed has been turned into a rails to trails trail through St. Anthony's Wilderness.
Clara married Andrew Bohr in 1894 at age 18. Over the next 16 years she gave birth to 10 children and had one still born baby. She was the matriarch of a close family. She was a very good mother and her children and grandchildren all loved her. She was a jolly person who loved to talk and laughed often.
Mammy had a sister and several brothers that lived in the Suedberg area. Her brother, John Felty, was involved in politics, and held a public office in the Suedberg area, probably Pine Grove Township.
See also the notes on Andrew Bohr, her husband.
Reminisces by Don Ruth, great grandson: I remember Mammy and Pappy Bohr when they were very old and living with their daughter, Lottie Dinger, in Molleystown. When we visited them, my mother would sit in the kitchen with Mammy Bohr and Aunt Lottie. Mammy Bohr would "hold court" and they always seemed to be having a good time. I don't know what they talked about because I was too young to care, and even if I did, they spoke mostly in Pennsylvania Dutch. They would only speak in English if they were talking to my father, my sister or myself. Mammy Bohr died when I was just six years old.
