Biography

Edmund Ferby [Fereby] owned land in Mayfield Sussex [1] He married firstly, according to the Visitation pedigree, "Margaret, eldest daughter of Richard Young of London, descended from an ancient family in Berks", and by her had issue -

1. Leonard Ferby 2. Thomas Ferby, an overseer of the will of George Barnwell in 1625. 3. John Ferby, probably died v. p. 4. Edmund Ferby, died before 1619. 5. Katherine, died unmarried. Will dated 7 Nov. 1633, proved (Rochester) 2 Jan. 1634/5 by Nichoas Tooke executor. She desires to be buried in the church of Dartford; there are bequests to the poor of Dartford and Paul's Cray. 6. Margaret, married Nicholas Tooke and had issue (Kent Visitation 1663-8). 7. Rebecca, married John Monger and had issue. 8. Elizabeth, married George Barnwell of Rochester, and had issue. 9. Bridget, of Bullyhill, Rochester, died unmarried. [2]. She desires to be buried in St. Nicholas church, Rochester. 10. Christian 11. Martha, probably died v. p.

Edmund Ferby married secondly, Rachel, daughter and coheir of William White of Hampstead, and widow of Richard Manning. He died at St. Paul's Cray on 15 Feb. 1624/5. His Will dated 17 Sep. 1623, was proved P.C.C. (30 Clarke) 7 Mar. 1624/5 by Leonard Ferby, son and executor. He desires to be buried "in my chapel in the church of Paul's Cray, where many of my ancestors are buried." To his son Thomas he leaves his mansion house in Paul's Cray [Hill] late in the tenure of Mrs. Holmden, a widow, a tykehill at Crockenhill in the occupation of John Moger, a farm at Farnborough, and a tenement [of land] in St. Mary's Cray, and to each of his daughters, Bridget and Christian £350 on marriage and £30 a year meanwhile. He states that the jointure of his wife Rachel superabundantly contervailed the estate he received from her. The overseers are "Nicholas Tooke of London and George Barnwell of Rochester, two of my sons-in-law". The Will of his widow, Rachel, dated 28 Mar. 1625 was proved P.C.C. (33 Hele) 18 Feb. 1625/6 by her "well-beloved cousin" Edward Manning the elder of Kevington in St. Mary's Cray, executor.
