Biography

Henry de Ferrers, 2nd Lord Ferrers of Groby, son and heir of William de Ferrers, Knt., 1st Lord Ferrers of Groby, and Margaret? de Segrave, was born about 1303 (age 22 in 1325).^[1][2][3]

Lands: Groby, Fenny Drayton, Thurnby, and Waltham, Leicestershire; Stebbing and Woodham Ferrers, Essex; Chapel Brampton, Northamptonshire, etc., and, in right of his wife, Fenton Culvert, Staffordshire;^[1] Stoke upon Tern, Shropshire, etc.^[2]

8 July 1331: "Appointment of Henry de Ferrariis, who has married Isabella daughter and one of the heiresses of Theobald de Verdon, tenant in chief of the late king, to the custody of the manor of Balterdeleye, and of lands in Bokenhale and Fanton, co. Stafford, and Lodelowe, co. Salop, late of the same Theobald, during pleasure."^[4]

Titles:^[1] Keeper of the Channel Islands 3 February 1332/3; Keeper of Berwick on Tweed in 1335; Justice of Chester 1336-1337 and 1340-1343; Chamberlain to the King March 1336/7 to November 1340.^[3]

The King took his homage and Henry had livery of his fathers lands 24 April 1325. In 1326, Henry accompanied the King's son, Edward, Earl of Chester, to France in the retinue of Sir Henry de Beaumont.^[3] Henry was summoned to Parliament from 25 January 1329/30 to 15 November 1338 by writs directed Henrico de Ferariis.^[1][3]

Henry accompanied the King to Ireland in 1331/2, was one of the "Disinherited" who participated in the 1332 invasion of Scotland by Edward de Balliol,^[1] and was on the King's service to Scotland in 1336.^[3] He received a general pardon for all offenses, including the capture of Roger de Mortimer, Earl of March, in 1338; in 1339, he was one of those appointed to treat with the Count of Flanders;^[3] and, in 1340, he was with the king at the Battle of Sluys.^[1]

Marriage and Children

Henry married before 20 February 1330/1 Isabel de Verdun, fourth daughter and co-heiress of Thebaud de Verdun, Knt., 2nd Lord Verdun, by his second wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Gilbert de Clare, Knt., Earl of Gloucester and Hertford.^[1][3] They had one son and two daughters:

• William, Knt., 3rd Lord Ferrers of Groby, born 28 February 1332/3, died 8 January 1370/1, married first Margaret de Ufford and had issue, married second Margaret de Percy^[1]
• Philippe, married Sir Guy de Beauchamp^[1] and had issue; Phillippe died 5 August 1384^[5][6]
• Elizabeth, wife of David de Strathbogie, 12th Earl of Atholl, 3rd Lord Strathbogie, and of John Malewayn, Esq.,^[1] having issue with her first husband; Elizabeth died in October 1375^[7][8]

Death and Burial

Henry died on 15 September 1343 at Groby, Leicestershire and was buried at Ulverscroft Priory, Leicestershire. Isabel, Henry's widow, died 25 July 1349, during the pestilence.^[1][2][3]
