Biography

Simeon Gallup Fish, born 16 Sep 1837 at Groton, Connecticut, was the third child of Nathan Gallup Fish (1804-1870) and Emeline Frances (Miner) Fish (1805-1871) [1].

An account of his life is presented in the Fish genealogy:

2082 LIEUT. SIMEON GALLUP9 FISH (Nathan8, Sands7, Nathan6, Nathan5, Samuel4, John3, Alice2, John1), soldier, ship builder, town official, son of (1990) Nathan G. and Emeline (Miner) Fish, was b. at Groton, Conn., Sept. 16, 1837; d. at Mystic, Conn., Oct. 1906; m. June 24, 1868, Eliza Eldridge, who was b. June 3, 1839, dau. of Robert N. and Melinna L. (Johnson) Eldridge.
He was educated at Mystic and began life as a sailor following the career of his respected father. His first voyage was in the Good Ship B. F. Hoxie, Capt. Geo. B. Crary, to Cape Horn, Callao and London. In Mystic he was associated with Maxson, Fish & Co., in ship-building. In 1861, he enlisted in the 26th Conn. Volunteers; he was mustered out as a lieutenant in 1863. He then went with John Owen9 Fish & Co., of New York; in a few years he went over to the firm of Appleton, Noyes & Co., shoe dealers, of Boston. Later he was back in New York in business for himself. He was elected on the Republican ticket as selectman of Groton in 1901, and each year except one thereafter. In 1904 he was elected Town Representative. He was an active member of the Baptist Church.

There were at least 3 children documented from Eliza (Eldredge) and Simeon G. Fish:

  1. Melinna L. Fish, 3 June 1869 – 6 April 1885
  2. Helen E. Fish, 22 July 1877 – 1958 [2]
  3. Julia Fish, 8 October 1882 – 25 March 1885

In 1870, this family was enumerated in census records of New London, Connecticut [3]. In 1880 they were in Groton, where they remained [4],[5].

Lieut. Simeon Gallup Fish died 15 Oct 1906 at Mystic, Connecticut. His grave is in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic, New London County, Connecticut, USA [6].
