Notes

  • Note N49Phillip Fishburn came to America in 1749. He was a wealthy man because he owned and operated the Fishburn vineyards and winery in Planig, Germany. (Planig's nearest railroad station is in Frankfort, Germany).
  • The original Fishburn home is right on the square of Planig. It still stands with the Fishburn Coat of Arms between the door and eaves. Actually there are four Fishburn homes and the Fishburn Church (across the street from the Phillip Fishburn's home) on the Planig Square. The original Fishburn home has been kept in tact, including the furniture. Modern additions have been added on the back.
  • The wine warehouses are caves and the operation is still in the Fishburn Family. The wine is imported into the U.S. as Blue Nun, but there is no indication on the label that it is from the Fishburn vineyard and winery.
  • This information comes from cousin, Paul Hoffer, Millerstown, PA (his mother was a Fishburn) through cousin Vera Weaver. When Paul Hoffer visited Planig he slept in the bed where Phillip Fishburn was born (1722). Paul also has pictures of the original house.
  • Rudolph (Jack) Myers' grandmother was a Fishburn.

John Philip Fishburn (1722-1795) (aka Johann, aka Philipp, aka Fischborn, aka John Philip Fishburn III, aka Philip the Pioneer ) Son of Johann Phillip Fischborn and Anna Catharina Bretz

Summary

John Philip Fishburn was born 14 May 1722 in Planig, Rhinesland, Hess, Germany, and died 22 February 1795 in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He married Catherina Elisabeth Bretz on 10 November 1752.

He changed the spelling of his name to Fishburn soon after he arrived in the Colonies.

John Philip is referred to in some research as "Philip the Pioneer." John Philip's place of birth has also been seen written as Planich, Hessdarmstadt, Germany.

He immigrated to America in 1749. John Philip was one of the first settlers of Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. His original tract of land includes much of what is now Hershey, Pennsylvania, the Hershey Chocolate properties, and surrounding farm land.

Philip probably landed at New York as there is no record of his taking the Oath of Allegiance at Philadelphia in 1749.

At one point Philip went back to Germany and in 1752 brought his bride to be to America.

He 1st married Catharina Elisabeth Bretz (10 November 1752) and they had 9 known children together. After Catharina's death in 1788, he married Margaret Worst. They had no children.

He served in support of the Revolutionary War, and four of his sons (Philip, Ludwig, Peter, and Dietrich), served in the Patriot Army. John Philip was a farmer and a gunsmith and made and repaired guns during the war.

He died at the age of 73 years and is buried at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. He left the bulk of his land to his sons, Philip and Ludwig.

John Philip Fishburn's family bible: "John Philip Fishburn was born the 15th day of May2 in the year 1722 in Plannich in Churpfaltz Germany and was baptized and confirmed in a Lutheran congregation He came to America in 1749 and died in the month of February 22 in the year 1795 from the effects of old age reached the age of 73 years and some days in Derry Township Lancaster County Pennsylvania " Note: Derry Township, Lancaster County later became Derry Township, Dauphin County.

From William H. Egle, Annual Volume 1898, p. 147. Records Of the Ev. Lutheran Church at Campbellstown, Pennsylvania. Record of Burials. (It is not stated whether the date is that of death or burial). From this source, the following information is found (copied exactly): "1795. Feb. 24, John Philip Fishborn, b. May 24, 1722, Planich, near Creutznacht, Palatinate; sponsors, grandparents; communed; married Catharine Bretz; lived in this state 45 years; begat 9 children, 8 surviving, 4 sons and 4 daughters; married a second time in 1789; no issue; sick 5 days; aged 72 y., 9 mo.; text, Matthew xxiv, 42. (Hummelstown.)"

From the book "The Fishburns" by John Fishburn, Sunriver, Oregon, 1985: "One of the early German immigrants who settled among the Derry Scotch-Irish in Lancaster, now Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, was Johann Philipp Fischborn. In a manuscript written in 1893, Philip's great-grandson Philip B. Fishburn, writes, 'He was born in Germany in Plannich, nine miles from Kreuznach, Hessdarmstadt, May 7, 1722, and in the year 1749 he had left the old country and went on ship and came across the deep ocean into this country at New York or Philadelphia not knowing right at which place and from whence he had started out on a journey and had traveled over the hills and dales through the country in search for good land and good stones and pure good water and water power near to it suitable for grinding grain. And at last he came to the place where we are now settled down and came to a nice stream of running water pure and clear.' " (p. 1) Note: The manuscript is a chronological family history which took the author, Philip B. Fishburn 3 years to complete. It is written in a "run-on" sentence style with very little punctuation. All the nouns in the manuscript, in fact, most of the words are capitalized. The original is written on loose sheets of paper in long hand which the author had bound. In 1929, the original handwritten manuscript was in the possesion of Rev. Henry Hoffer of Hershey, Pennsylvania, whose late wife was a Fishburn. In September of that year, The State Library of Pennsylvania made photostatic copies of it for the Pennsylvania Department of Archives, where it is on file.

John Phillip Fishbourne secured deeds to land in what is now Hershey, Pennsylvania, in what was then Lancaster county. A patent for 572 acres was granted by Thomas and Richard Penn (undated). In 1767 an additional 292 acres were deeded to Philip by John Penn. Another purchase of 189 acres was recorded in April 1785. All three are recorded in the Land Office of the Department of Community Affairs, Harrisburg.

In the bibliography of H. D. French, History of Dauphin County, Warrantee of land in Derry Township, Philip Fishbourn, 50 acres, 10/14/1754.

According to Broderbund's World Family Tree Volume 8, Tree # 1838, "John Philip received a 600 acre grant from William Penn's two sons. He built a log cabin. He built a limestone house for John in 1785. He then built another house for Ludwig in 1803. The 1785 house has been renovated and still is used."

From Historical and Genealogical Notes and Queries by William H. Egle, 3rd Series, Volume 3, reprint 1970(?): "Philip Fishburn was one of the first settlers of Hummelstown. He was a gunsmith, and did good service in the Revolution repairing and making guns for the patriot army." Note: Egle's "Notes and Queries" was originally published between 1879 and 1895 as a series of newspaper columns in the Harrisburg "Daily Telegraph," then carried forward and published in five annual volumes between 1896 and 1900. The columns (and offprints of the columns which appeared in pamphlet form) were reprinted in seven volumes between the years 1894 and 1896.

Catherina Elisabeth Bretz was born 7 September 1724 in Germany, and died 9 October 1788 in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, Pa.. She married John Philip Fishburn III on 10 November 1752, son of Johann Philipp Fischborn II.

Catherina Elisabeth Bretz's name is found in an early Fishburn Bible belonging to the John Fishburn family of Muskatine, Iowa. She is named as the wife of Philip Fischborn (who was born on 14 May 1722) and the mother of Philip Fischborn (who was born on 15 November 1754). The page from the Bible is written in German. The Bible gives Catherina's maiden name as Bretz and her place of birth as "Europa."

About the Fishburn Name

The name Fishburn has been seen spelled quite a few different ways: Fischborn, Fishborn, Fishburn, and sometimes Fishburne. The following is an excerpt from the original copy of the history of the Johan Philip Fishburn Family by Philip B. Fishburn, 1893, which is on file in the State Library at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This is the last paragraph of that manuscript: "We find in this record that the name Fishburn is spelled in three different ways namely in 1744 three foreigners came to this contra and each of them had spelled his name Fischborn and five years later in 1749 the grate grate grandfather settled in this contra and he spelled his name Fishborn and did Ludwich his son and I think all of Ludwich children and grandchildren spelled Fishborn. Now Philip a brother to Ludwich and I seen his own handwriting and he had spelled his name Fishburn and so far all his childrens and grandchildrens so it seems to me that I and others are on the wrong track to spell Fishburn because the identical name was spelled Fishborn and another thing that makes me believe that Fishburn is not altogether true because we all know that a fish is born in the water and not on dry land and now it seem to me thats not much worth and use to me to change the spellings Fishburn to Fishborn because I was teached for more than fifty years ago when I went to school to spell Fishburn."

According to Broderbund's World Family Tree Volume 8, Tree # 1838, "Fishburn name is Scottish for Fish Creek. Fishburns immigrated to Black Forest in Germany about 1349. Fishburns were seafarers and may have originated at small Arctic island of Jan Mayes (east of Greenland and north of Iceland....

He seems to have emigrated from Germany in the right time frame. Could he be a Palatine?

Fishburn-168 and Fishburn-52 appear to represent the same person because: There is a very slight spelling variance in first and middle name. These profiles should be merged. Fishburn-168 has more data, connections to children, etc.
