Biography

Cheshire (historic flag)
Edward Fitton MP was born in Cheshire, England.

Edward Fitton was born about 1548 at Gawsworth, Cheshire, England.

He was the eldest surviving son of Sir Edward Fyton and his wife, Anne Werburton.[1] His elder brother, Edward Fyton, was his parents son and heir apparent when he was born on 1 October, 1546, unfortunately he died November that same year, aged five weeks.[1]

He would have grown up with his siblings in the family home of Gawsworth Hall which he inherited on his fathers death in 1579.[2]

Edward graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford in 1566.[3] He was a student of Gray’s Inn in 1568, a precursor to his political future.[4]

He married Alice (Holcroft) Fitton, daughter and heir of Sir John Holcroft, knight.[1] They were the parents of:

  1. Edward Fyton,[1] born in 1572; he was cited in the probable Christening record of Edward Fytton on 25th February/March 1673[5]
  2. Anne (Fitton) Newdigate was christened at Gawsworth in 1574.[6]
  3. Richard Fitton was probably born in Gawsworth around 1575.

In "an old Masse Booke att GOSEWORTH", Edward recorded the death of his mother, Lady Anna Fyton, who died on 9 January, 1574, our calendar: 5 Id. Januarii obiit Domina Anna Fyton filia Domini Petri Warburton uxor Edwardi Fyton militis tunc Thesaurarii Hiberniae Anno Domini 1573.[1] Edward also recorded when his mother was buried: 16 Cal. Februarii sepulta fuit Domina Anna Fyton mater mei E. Fitton 1573,[1] which is 17 January, 1574 our calendar.

On 11 October, 1579, Edward Fitton, the younger, was dubbed a knight in Ireland by Sir William Pelham, lord justice.[7]

He passed away in 1606. He is buried in the Fitton Family Tomb in the Chancel of the Church of St James the Great in Gawsworth, Cheshire[8] [9]

His last Will and Testament dated 4th March 1606 was proved on 17th March 1606. He died the day his Will was written.[10] [11]

In "an old Masse Booke att GOSEWORTH", the descent of Gawsworth is listed:[1]

Research Notes

  • There appears to be a little uncertainty as to Edwards birth year. No Christening record can been found in Cheshire Parish Records 1538-2000. As cited in his death sources, FAG cites 1548 and the Gawsworth church website as 1550. As documented invarious attached sources of his university and political careers cite both years.
  • As an eminent family name in British history the Fitton family are widely documented. There are various sources that concur that Edward graduated from Brasenose, Oxford around 1566. At this time the source cited for Edwards attendance at Oxford is from British History Online/Wikipedia entry. A register of Alumni of Brasenose College does not have Edwards name, however the records were admittedly patchy. Edward can however be seen in the transcription provided for Grays Inn Register of Admissions in 1568.
  • There is another possible Christening record for his first son, Edward. There is also an Edward Phitton Christened 1st February 1673 in Gawsworth[12]. There is also a christening records for an Anne Fytton in 1570, no death record can be found at this time but it is likely that Anne was their first child, and possible she died before the birth of Anne in 1574[13]
  • The Wikipedia page for Edward Fitton suggests another son, Alexander. His known sourced sons are Edward and Richard[14]. The only other source at this time that suggests The existence of an Alexander Fritton is documented here[15]. This Document suggests an Alexander Fritton (no dates provided) was Edwards brother, not his son.
