Biography

The Dictionary of Irish Biography profile[1] for his grandson Cormac, 9th MacCarthy Lord of Muskerry, calls Edmund the "9th Baron of Lixnaw" whereas The Peerage,[2] citing Cokayne, calls Edmund the 8th Baron of Lixnaw.

According to The Peerage:

  • He succeeded as 8th Baron of Kerry and Lixnaw in 1469.
  • In 1485 he recovered lands which had been granted to his ancestors by King John.
  • In 1489 he was summoned to attend King Henry VII's court at Greenwich, but disobeyed the summons.
  • He was "a vessel of wisdom and hospitality."
  • He died in 1510.

FitzMaurice-174 and Fitzmaurice-39 appear to represent the same person because: Same first name Edmund, exact same wife, one is 8th Baron and one is 9th Baron. Just a numbering issue to fix -- typical in Ireland at the time. See also Edmund, another 9th Baron, who's a grandson.
