Biography

On 10 September 1317, Ranulf son of Ralph, and his heirs, had a grant free warren in all their demesne lands in Woodhall (in Aysgarth), Spennithorne, Swainby, Neuton Pygot and Aysgarth, co. York. (Cal Chart. Rolls, iii, 363). All these lands had been held by his grandfather Ranulf fitz Ranulf, at the time of Kirkby’s inquest in 1284-5.

He is clearly not the same person as Ralph de Lascelles as shown by Close Rolls: 22 May 1319, Ralph de Lasceles and Ranulph son of Ralph acknowledge that they owe to John de Britannia, earl of Richmond, £46 13s. 4d.; to be levied, in default of payment, of their lands and chattels in co. York. (CCR, 1318-1323, 127).

Sir Ranulf son of Ralph was living in August 1343, and was succeeded by his son John fitz Ranulf, also known as John de la Woodhall. They were the ancestors of the family which adopted the name of Fitzrandolph of Spennithorne.

Why has Theophania de Lascelles been added back as his mother? I thought that https://groups.google.com/g/soc.genealogy.medieval/c/hEXtUdC8Zl0/m/ZLed9LfXCAAJ showed that his mother was a first wife of Ralf FitzRanulph and that Theophania was a second wife.

Sorry. I have removed her as mother.

To hopefully prevent anyone else in the future from making the same mistake that I made, I have created a wikitree profile for the unknown first wife of Ralf FitzRanulf (and mother of this Ranulf FitzRalf). Question: Should her birth place perhaps be listed as Yorkshire (uncertain)?

I added the locations England to her birth and death since no other information is known. I also added a death date of before 1299.

Ranulf FitzRalf, heir to Spennithorne, has been conflated in the past with his half-brother Ralph de Lascelles. Postings on soc.genealogy.medieval https://groups.google.com/g/soc.genealogy.medieval/c/hEXtUdC8Zl0/m/ZLed9LfXCAAJ show that Ranulf was the son of a first wife of Ralf FitzRanulf, and that Theophania de Lascelles, mother of Ralph de Lascelles, was his second wife. Ranulf is said to have been holding Spennithorne in 1316, so he would have been born by 1295. I have changed his birth date and removed Theophania as his mother.

Thank you Mary for the information and for making the changes.

This makes me wonder if Barbara Lascelles (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lassell-78) was really his granddaughter. Perhaps Barbara was instead a granddaughter of Ralph de Lascelles?

The Stansfield pedigree cited calls her daughter of John Lassell of Lassell Hall, Almondbury, Yorkshire. I'm not sure who that is, but since John FitzRanulf never used the name Lascelles, he would not be her father. I haven't found any record of Ralph de Lascelles having a son John, but it is possible. There were other Lascelles families in Yorkshire, including at Sowerby (see https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/yorks/north/vol2/pp58-70) and Breckenbrough.
