Biography

Mary was a daughter of Edmund FitzAlan aka Arundel, 9th or 2nd Earl of Arundel, and Alice Warenne.[1][2][3][4]

The evidence is as follows:

  • Papal Petition of 1364: Mary la Straunge, lady of Corfham, widow, and sister of the earl of Arundell. For plenary remission at the hour of death.[5] [Mary FitzAlan married John le Strange, 4th Lord Strange. The earl of Arundel at this time was Richard FitzAlan, son of Edmund and Alice]
  • An "ordinance and device" registered with the will of Richard, Earl of Arundel, referred to his sister Mary Lestrange.[6]
  • Deed C. 3059. Agreement between the attorneys of Richard, earl of Arundel and Surrey, appointed to deliver dower to Isabel, late the wife of John Lestrange of Blakemere, the earl's nephew (c 1376).[1][7] [John le Strange, the son of John le Strange, 4th Lord Strange, and Mary FitzAlan, had married Isabel de Beauchamp][8]

Her year of birth and place of birth are unknown. Given that (a) her father Edmund died in 1326[9]; and (b) her son John le Strange was born c 1353[10] and her daughter Ankaret le Strange was born c 1361[11], then her birth may have been at the latter end of her father's life, perhaps c 1320-1327.

Marriage

Mary FitzAlan married Sir John le Strange, 4th Lord Strange of Blackmere/Blakemere, Shropshire, son of Sir John le Strange, 2nd Lord Strange of Blackmere, and Ankaret le Boteler, before 1354 (eldest son was born c 1353).[1][2][3][4][12]

Sir John le Strange died on 12 May 1361.[10]

In 37 Edward III (1363-1364) Mary late the wife of John lestraunge of Whitchurch was granted view of frankpledge of various manors in Shropshire.[13]

In 1367 William de Crophull, Rector of Dodleston, Cheshire, had license to be absent for two years to serve Lady Mary le Strange of Blakemer [Blackmere, Shropshire].[2][14]

Children

Death

Mary, widow of John le Strange of Blakemere, died on 29 August 1396.[17]

Research Notes

Complete Peerage[12][23] had placed Mary as the daughter of Richard, Earl of Arundel, rather than as his sister. This appears to be an error.

Medieval Lands also shows her as the daughter of Richard, 3rd Earl of Arundel, and Isabel Despencer, Mary being supposedly bastardized in 1344 when their marriage was annulled. The entry is based on Complete Peerage.

I was proposing a merge of FitzAlan-648 into this profile when it appeared to let me proceed with the merge. However, I wish to run it by you first.

There were two stray, effectively unsourced profiles: Ankaret FitzAlan FitzAlan-647 and Isabel FitzAlan FitzAlan-648.

I am not aware of an Ankaret FitzAlan who married a Talbot. There is of course an Ankaret le Strange who married a Talbot and she was a daughter of Mary FitzAlan. The mother now attached to FitzAlan-647 is an Isabel FitzAlan. There are sources that had erroneously misnamed Mary FitzAlan as Isabel FitzAlan.

I adopted FitzAlan-648. Hopefully we can merge those two profiles away.

Regards, Steve

Removed parents Richard (FitzAlan) de Arundel and Isabel (Despenser) de Arundel: no daughter Isabel named by Richardson in MCA2 p.185-7. This profile has no sources.

Corrections to Complete Peerage, on Chris Phillips's site.

This is probably a clue to the origin of the fictitious Isabel FitzAlan. An Isabel late the wife of John LeStrange made an agreement over dower. Somebody seems to have taken this lady to be the widow of the 4th Lord Strange. But she was really Isabel (Beauchamp), the widow of the 5th Lord Strange.

FitzAlan-648 and FitzAlan-635 do not represent the same person because: Different details
Richardson, Douglas: Magna Carta Ancestry, 2nd edn. (2011), 4 vols, Volume 2, page 185, 5, ix.

Also Volume 1, page 209, 7.

Other sources vary.
