Biography
Mariot, (a.k.a. Beatrix), was the youngest daughter of Robert Fleming, 1st Lord Fleming, and his first wife, Janet Douglas, third daughter of James Douglas, 7th Earl of Douglas.[1][2]
Confusion with Names In regards to her parents family James Paul notes four children; Malcolm, Robert, Elizabeth and Mariot.[1] William Hunter[4], a family historian, suggests he had two sons and two daughters but instead of Mariot mentions Beatrix. Unfortunately Hunter makes no mention of the daughter's marriages and it is not possible to determine whether there were two or three daughters. The Peerage of Scotland[5] provides that he had one son and two daughters; Malcolm, Elizabeth and Beatrix, the older, Elizabeth, marrying John Livingston, Lord Livingston, and the younger, Beatrix, marrying Sir William Stirling of Keir. Hence we can presume that: a) Robert was illegitimate; and b) Mariot and Beatrix are the same. N.B. Fraser joins Paul in referring to her as Mariot.[2]
Birth As she married in 1472, she was certainly born before 1460.
Death Her husband re-married before 1495 and there is no record of an anullment making her death likely before that event.
