William Forbes was born c 1426, son of Alexander Forbes, 1st Lord Forbes.
As the second son, he entered into ecclesiastical duties, becoming vicar of Edinburgh, and was then elected Rector of St Giles in 1464.
When St. Giles was transformed into a College in 1466, he was elevated to Provost.[1]
Research Notes
There has been some confusion in source links on the internet as to the Provosts christian name. Balfour names the provost of St Giles as William and Douglas calls him John. Chambers and Lees also name the Provost as William.
