John Fortescue KS is Notable.

Sir John Fortescue is generally distinguished in various literature as Sir John Fortescue of Meaux. His son also Sir John Fortescue , was Chief Justice of the King's Bench.[1]

He was born in the 1370s, the second son of William Fortescue of Whympston Devon and his wife Elizabeth Beauchamp, widow of Richard Branscombe, a daughter of Sir John Beauchamp of Ryme in Dorset by his wife Margaret Whalesborough, and a co-heiress of her brother Thomas Beauchamp of Ryme.[2]

Battle of Agincourt 1415

He was a younger son, held lands said to be worth £20 a year in Combe, Efford and elsewhere in the parish of Holbeton. He served in the French wars under Henry V and was present in the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. He served two earls of Devon, Edward Courtenay and Hugh Courtenay, as steward from about 1413 to 1422.[3]

Following the Seige of Meaux, in 1422, he was made captain of Meaux as related on the Fortescue mural monument in Weare Giffard Church. The monument was erected in 1638, over 200 years later by Hugh Fortescue (1592-1661).[4]

William Norreys had issue by a daughter of Roger Colaton (or Collaton) , a daughter, Eleanor who married Sir John Fortescue, of Shepham, Captain of Meaux, by whom she had the following children.[5]

Henry, the eldest Son, a Lawyer and MP
John, the Second son, who became Lord Chief Justice of England and Lord Chancellor to Henry VI.
Richard.

He returned to England before the year 1431, and appears to have had his residence at Shepham, in South Devon. [6]

He was knighted by the duke of Bedford in about 1426, and died in or before 1435. [3]

Research Notes

The Coat of arms of the Earl Fortescue used in many Fortescue profiles was created in 1789 for Hugh Fortescue, 3rd Baron Fortescue (1753–1841) and has been deleted from this profile

The Visitation of Sussex shows intermediate generations before and after John.

And where is the evidence that he was at the Battle of Agincourt? Despite later assertions, presumably intended to boost an otherwise undistinguished ancestor, there's no contemporary proof I've seen that he even served in France.

Hadn't read previous posts before commenting! Is there perhaps a reason why, despite two valid suggestions, his eldest son and heir Henry has not been added? And why his daughter-in-law is still shown as his daughter?

No evidence in massively outdated sources for places of birth and death. His three known sons were almost certainly with his first wife, who is not mentioned here. And I don't believe he was ever knighted.

There is a problem with Joan the daughter who should be Joan Bozun, daughter of Edmund Bozun. This Joan was the wife of Henry Fortescue, the eldest son who is missing here. See Fortescue, Lord Clermont, Sir John Fortescue Knight. His Life, Works and Family History in Two Volumes. Vol. II. London: Printed for private distribution, 1869. chart following page 42 and p. 45 (citing Collins, vol. v. 337, and Visitation of Devon, 1564, &e. Lodge, Peerage of lreland, makes her daughter of Wood.)
