Born in Scarborough, Maine in 1772, he was the son of Joseph Foss (b. c1751) and wife, Hannah (Carle) Foss (b. 1748). He was married in 1795 to Elizabeth Libby and resided in Scarborough. He died on 28 December 1863, age 89[1].

PLEASE NOTE: he should not be confused with his cousin, another Joseph Foss who was born in Saco, Maine, 15 July 1772, son of John and Rachel (Milliken) Foss. That Joseph was married in Biddeford, Maine, (intentions) 12 July 1793, to Mary Bickford.
