Disputed origins

While Torrey identifies her as French,[1] Robert Charles Anderson did not find a maiden name "French" when he profiled Edward Lamb in 1995.[2] In the bibliographic comments of the profile, Anderson wrote,[3]

"In 1990 Joan S. Guilford examined the family of Edward Lamb, arriving at some conclusions which are not always consistent with those given above."

Margaret French could not have been both the mother of Hannah Lamb, born 1633 at Watertown, and the daughter of Thomas French and Susanna Riddlesdale. Thomas and Susan did have a daughter named Margaret, but she was reported baptized at Assington, Suffolk, England on 12 March 1619.[4] An extracted English record reports Thomas and Susan's daughter Margaret's baptism (as 12 March 1620), also reporting her death 25 November 1635.[5]

While the death record has not otherwise been confirmed, based on the baptisms given for Thomas' children, it is reasonable to assume Margaret French was baptized as an infant, thus would have been quite young in 1633, by which time Margaret ____ had married to Edward Lamb.

The Lamb marriage is also awkward in terms of what is known about the French family migration. Thomas [Jr] (son of Thomas and Susan) migrated 1632 with his sister Alice.[6]; two more sisters, Dorcas and Susan, arrived the following year.[7] It was not until still later that the French parents, Thomas and Susan, migrated with the younger children.[8]

Still other parents, surname French, are found attributed to this Margaret in Ancestral File and other FamilySearch: : User Submitted Genealogies."

Unconfirmed, thus only a possible explanation, this apparent French or _____ conflict may somehow relate to information about an early Braintree man, John French. In an 1876 work about him by Sidney French, John French was reported born about 1612 and died 6 August 1692.[9] John French's first wife, Grace, died in 1680, age 58; he married again in 1683, to Eleanor Veazie, widow of William. Following the death of John French, heirs petitioned the court for a division of his estate. Transcript of the petition mentions a Margaret Lamb, but this name is given among the "children of Mary Lamb deceased."[10]

As with all genealogical work, findings such as those above are subject to review and update based on improved historical discovery and insight.

Biography

Calling her Margaret _____, Robert Charles Anderson reported she married by 1633 to Edward Lamb based on the birth of first child 27 December 1633.[11] Edward Lamb died "probably at Boston"[12] after 27 June 1648 (when daughter Elizabeth was baptized[13]) and before 1650, by which time Margaret had married again to Samuel Allen of Braintree.[14] Margaret died after 16 Sep 1669, probably at Braintree, when she was deposed as an executor of Samuel Allen's will.[15]
