Biography

Matthew Fuller was born on 27 Mar 1754 in Cornwall, Litchfield, Connecticut to parents Aaron Fuller and Ruth Sawyer. He died after 1810, but there is no evidence that he died in New York. See Ohio research below.

Matthew may have been married twice. Children: Matthew Jr. 1776, Jerusha 1788, Mary (Polly) Ann 1798.

He was the younger brother of Aaron Fuller Jr, who was Charlotte County Quartermaster in the Rev War, and justice of the peace. There is much more written about the brother.

Matthew can be found in 1784 Whitehall (Skenesboro) records obtaining confiscated lands of the Tories. In 1790 census (possibly in Glastonbury, VT). In 1800 census in Whitehall 1 boy 16 or up, 1 male 26 up, 1 male over 45; 4 girls under 10, 2 girls 10-16, 1 female 26 - 45. In 1810 Whitehall 1 boy under 10, 1 boy under 16, 1 male 26-45, 2 girls btw 10 -16, 1 woman over 45

Research

"My ancestor was his daughter, Polly, b 1798. If I am right, Matthew had children from the 1770s into 1800. The Whitehall statistics from the census bear this out. Whether that is by one wife or two, I don't know. He apparently had a first son who may be the Matthew Fuller Jr. who married Annie Huggins. and had Stephen Fuller in 1802. This line is documented as Stephen may have been a Mormon pioneer.

My ancestor, Polly, would have been one of the younger children. She married in 1814, at age 16, and remained in Whitehall.

This has suggested to me that some of the family went to Ohio at this time. I am assuming Matthew and his wife if living followed one of their boys to Painesville, where I notice other Whitehall names in the census. The family I am tracking there is the Jacob Fuller family. That family is also unsure of their origin, but believe it is the Whitehall Fullers. First wife Lucy Evans.

I also postulate the wife of Matthew Fuller may have been a Falkenburg. This is a work in progress and I believe it can be proved or disproved by DNA. Adams-21565 16:30, 3 October 2019 (UTC)"

Ohio Research:

There is a Mathew Fuller in the 1820 and 1830 census for Painesville OH.

1820 Matthew Fuller, head of family. 1 b 16-18, one m 18-14, 1 m 45 or over. Mathew would be 65. 1 f 45 or over. Mrs. Matthew. 1person engaged in farming. Note also in the 1820 census on the same page (alphabetical indexing) is a Charles Falkenburg. This is an unusual spelling of Van Valkenburg, and name known and spelling known in Whitehall NY. I note that Matthew Jr. would not yet be 45.

1830 1 m 15-20, 1 m 20-30, 1 m 70+ (this Matthew would be 76 that year), 1f under 5, 1 f 20-30, 1 f 70-80. This suggests the parents were living with one of the sons who were btw 16 and 24 the decade before, and that the son had married and had a young daughter.Adams-21565 21:48, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
