Convent of Nuneaton Priory

Sir Robert of Meulan, 2nd Earl of Leicester, died 5 April 1168.[1]
His widow, Amice, is said to have entered the convent of Nuneaton Priory.[1][2] She died in August, year uncertain.[1]

Research Notes

Nuneaton Priory was one of many subordinate to the celebrated abbey of Fontevrault, Anjou, founded in 1100 for both monks and nuns of the Benedictine order.[2] Originally the Priory was located in at Kintbury in Berkshire in 1153, where it was founded by Robert earl of Leicester and Gervase Paynel, who was his son-in-law, having married the earl's daughter Isabel, widow of Simon de Senliz.[2] The order moved to Eaton in Warwickshire by 1155, called subsequently "Nuneaton".[2] The founder's wife, Amice, was one of many distinguished ladies in the Priory, and their daughter Hawise was there for her education prior to her marriage to the earl of Gloucester.[2]

The references to Montfort in the names of the Gael family may refer to L'Abbaye sur Meu, rather than a relationship to the Montfort families. Of course, it is perfectly normal to use a place of birth as a surname in these times. This is why I believe it is important to use full names of places, so there can be no confusion between Montfort L'Amaury, Montfort sur-Risle and as above Montfort sur Meu. The reason I suggest the above Montfort refers to the abbey is because the abbey is 24 kms from Gael. Whereas the holding of L'Amaury is for example 369 kms distant.
