Edward was the third son of Sir John Gage and Lady Penelope D'Arcy Gage. He was most likely born at Firle House in Sussex, the Gage family home, in 1625 or 1626 (he gave his age as 22 years when he was issued a marriage licence in 1648).[1] He moved with his mother Penelope to Hengrave Hall after the death of his father in 1633. His mother married Sir William Hervey in about 1643 and he married Maria, the daughter of Sir William in 1648.[1]
Penelope, daughter of Thomas Darcy, Earl Rivers, settled Hengrave on her third son, Edward Gage (1626-1706), who inherited it on her death in 1661.
Edward, who also served as sheriff of Sussex, was created a baronet in 1662. The Hengrave estate passed first to his son Sir William Gage (c. 1651-1727) after whom the greengage plum was named. Origin of greengage:- {green + gage, after Sir William Gage (1651-1727), Englishman who imported the trees from France (c. 1725)}

Edward died at his London house in Bloomsbury, perhaps on 31 December 1707 (see Research Notes), and a funeral was held at the parish church of St Giles in the Fields on 5 January 1707/8.[2] He was buried at Hengrave on 8 January 1707/8.[3]
He had made his will on 28 June 1706, which was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 23 January 1707/8.[4]
The earliest published source for Edward's death is Abel Boyer's History of the Reign of Queen Anne which were published in annual volumes. The sixth volume, published in 1708, states the following:[5]
The seventh volume, published a year later in 1709, provides additional and different information:[6]
A death date of 31 January 1707/8 conflicts with the funeral, burial and probate events, all of which occurred before this date. The age conflicts with the marriage licence and would make him older than his eldest brother Thomas Gage, Bt, whose age is well-attested. One possibility is that he in fact died on 31 December 1707, and the month was recorded incorrectly in the later publication.

Here is a link to Edward's licence for his marriage in 1648, in it he is stated as being 22 years old, giving him a birth date of c.1626. (which is already stated in the bio on this page.) The birth date of Edward of 1617 makes him older than his eldest brother Thomas, who was born circa 1619. (Obviously, brother John then falls some where between 1619-1625 & brother Henry is after 1626.)
