Biography

Richard Gaines II was born in 1726 in King William County, Virginia, he passed away in 1802 in Charlotte County, Virginia.[1][2] He is the son of Richard Gaines and Catherine Madison.[citation needed] He married Mildred Hollinger around 1749.[2]

They were the parents of :

  1. Richard Hollinger Gaines, born 19 May 1750, married Margaret Cunningham[2], died 20 Mar 1835 in Kentucky[3]
  2. Robert Gaines, born 1755, married Elizabeth ?[2]
  3. Mildred/Milly Gaines, born about 1761, married John Brown[2] [4]
  4. Elizabeth Gaines, born 1763, married Henry Brown[2][5]
  5. William, born 1767, married (1) Mary Latene Jennings[6], married (2) Elizabeth (Carter) Bouldin[7][2]

During the Revolutionary War he performed patriotic service by furnishing material aid to the military. He didn't serve in the armed forces.[8][2]

Richard Gaines's will written Feb. 19, 1800 (before 1802) Charlotte County Will Book 2, pp. 216-217. [9]

In Richard Gaines' will, he mentioned his sons as Richard, James, Robert, Thomas, Francis, and William; his daughters as Mildred Brown, Patsy Gaines, Elizabeth Brown, Anne Marshall, and Caty Price; his wife as Mildred. Daughter Frances was not mentioned, though her children apparently were. He mentioned grandchildren Richard Baker Gaines; Richard Hollinger Gaines; Richard Hollinger Gaines, son of Robert; Richard White Gaines; Richard Morton Price; Richard Gaines Marshall; Richard Brown, son of Henry; Richard Jennings Gaines. Parents of the grandchildren were probably: Francis and Nancy Baker Gaines; Robert and Elizabeth Rice Gaines; Rev. Thomas Hollinger and Sarah White Gaines; William and Caty Gaines Price; William and Anne Gaines Marshall; Henry and Elizabeth Gaines Brown; William C. And Mary Jennings Gaines.[10]

Note: It is clear that Richard Gaines II's children named some of their sons after their grandfather. It is easy to get all of the Richards mixed up.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Richard by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Richard:

Gaines-2299 and Gaines-360 appear to represent the same person because: an index to the will of Richard has been identified and the names of the children have been validated, dates are still estimates. The merge can now be approved.

There are a number of children attached to this person that have no source for the relationship, I have tried to find sources. In several cases the birth years are off. Can you add links to your sources, that will help me.

Raegena, can you tell me where you got the transcription of the Will? I think that is all we need to solve this issue.

Unfortunately, the Geni.com profile is so full of errors, I would not trust anything posted there. Here is what I wrote.

I have no idea who wrote this all up, but per both Sons of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Revolution, this man did not "serve". He did Patriotic Service and provided material aid, per ABERCROMBIE & SLATTEN, VA REV PUB CLAIMS, VOL 1, P 276

The man being described here is a combination of several men with the name Richard Gaines that were born in Virginia. There were at least 5 men who served for Virginia with the name of Richard Gaines.

As the Find a Grave is a copy and paste of what is on Geni, I am still concerned that we have real proof of his children.

Yahoo! I found an index to the will book on line...https://www.vagenweb.org/charlotte/W0INDEX2.TXT Based on it, I can confirm that the names you have listed are on that page! I will write something up and we can move forward with the merge, OK?

Gaines-2299 and Gaines-360 are not ready to be merged because: again, I believe we have a profile, Gaines-2299 that is a conflation of numerous men by the same name. Let' wait on the merge until we get all these men straightened out.

Gaines-2299 and Gaines-360 are not ready to be merged because: I agree with the wife of Richard Gaines being Mildred Hollinger, but the children listed as being Richard and Jeminia Pendleton are not correct. I have no records that show that Richard Gaines ever married a Pendleton. Richard's uncles William Henry and James Gaines both married Pendleton sisters, Isabella and Mary daughters of Henry Pendleton and Mary Bishop Taylor.

The children of Richard Gaines and Mildred Hollinger are: Richard H. Gaines, James Gaines, Robert Gaines, Frances “Frankey” Gaines Towne, Thomas H. Gaines, Mildred Gaines Brown, Elizabeth Gaines Brown, Catherine Gaines Price, Francis Gaines, William C. Gaines, Martha Gaines, and Mary Ann Gaines Marshall.

My ancestor was Judith (Pendleton?) Gaines, who married Thomas Chancellor. I have identified long regions on two chromosomes that are matched by multiple Gaines descendants (triangulated.) The Gaines cousins include descendants of 3 people who are currently shown here as children of this Richard Gaines-360. These are William Henry Gaines-962, who married Jane Botts, Jemima Gaines Speake, and Judith Gaines Chancellor. The triangulation also includes Lucy (Gaines) Botts, shown correctly as a daughter of another Richard Gaines, Gaines-907. Pendleton was used as a middle name in several of these branches.

Also, "Genealogical and Historical Notes on Culpeper County, Virginia," published 1900, states, Jemima Pendleton "m. her first cousin, Richard Gaines, son of Isabella Pendleton and Wm. Henry Gaines," their children listed as "1. William; 2. Lucy, m. ---Botts; 3. Rowland; 4. Germina, m. ---Speak; 5 Benjamin; 6. Nathaniel; 7. James; 8. Judith, m. ---Chancellor; 9. Annie, m. ---Crigler; 10. John Cook; 11. Elizabeth, m. ---Thomas."

Thus most of the children now with this Richard Gaines-360 instead appear to be children of Richard Gaines-907 (1731-1804) and Jemima Pendleton (or his first wife). Unless someone offers a better solution, I will remove all but 3 of the children now linked here to Richard Gaines-360 and place them with Richard Gaines-907. The three to remain here are Robert Gaines, Catherine (Gaines) Price, and probably Elizabeth (Gaines) George.
