Francis, son of Hirome Sr. and Margaret Taliaferro Gaines,
born 1759 and died October 1825. Francis married Judy Lively about 1780 in Albemarle Co. Va. Francis was born near Buck Island Creek in Albemarle Co. Va. He came to Elbert County, Ga. in 1792. He was a Captain in the Revolutionary War. Francis has an old fieldstone to mark his grave with the inscription “F.G. 1759 – 1825”. In the late summer of 1998 a group of about 30 of the descendants of Francis and Judy banded together and placed a large memorial to their grave.
This group of descendants was from all over the United States. It has been planned to dedicate the memorial in May 1999. The Sons of the American Revolution will be in charge of the dedication. Francis’s will was probated in Elbert Co. Ga. Nov. 1, 1825. Will book N 1825-1829. On this original will on record Francis signs his name with an “X”. This leads me to think he could not read or write, if this is true, could he have been an officer in the Revolutionary War?
One source states the Mormons family history center has in their records Judy Lively was born about 1769 in Albermarle Co. Va. If this is true and she married Francis Gaines about 1780 she would have been about 11 years old. This could not be true; one of the dates must be incorrect.
Mr. Leon Stratton, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and also a descendant of Francis Gaines has formulated a Biography of Francis Gaines. He did this with the help of his wife, a long time member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. It is as follows:
“Francis Gaines, born ca. 1759 in Albemarle County, Virginia, was a direct descendant of Sir John Gaines who came from Brecon, Wales to America about 1606. He was an officer in the Revolutionary War. He married Judy Lively in 1792. They then moved from Virginia to Georgia by way of an Indian Trail, which became highway 29. He was Granted 1200 acres of land for his War Service. The home Francis built was made of pine logs, hewn with axes. It was located on the west side of Rock Branch. There was a large spring north of his house. His slave quarters were across Rock Branch from his house. They settled on Rock Branch and built their home across the creek from where we are today. He drew land in the Land Lottery, drew more land in several other Land Lotteries, and bought and sold other lands after moving to Georgia.
Francis was not an educated man. He could not write his name; however, he was a smart businessman and owned many wheat and corn mills on Coldwater Creek and Pickens Creek. Some of the original land grant is still in the Gaines Family. It has not been sold or traded outside the family. Francis was a generous person and some of the land was given to several Churches so that houses of Worship might be erected.
Francis Gaines died in 1825 and his will was recorded in Elbert County. He Willed all of his assets to his wife for her life time, except his shot gun which he willed to his oldest son.”

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Francis by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Francis:
