Robert Taliafero Gaines was born on December 25, 1781 in Albemarle, Virginia. He was the son of Francis Joseph Hogan Gaines and Judith Barnett Lively. He married Sarah Alexander about 1801 in Georgia. He is listed in the 1850 census of Elbert, Georgia with his wife, Judith. Together they raised a large family. Robert died about 1860 in Elbert, Georgia. He is buried there in an unmarked grave, but his family and the sons of the American Revolution erected a large monument there. .

CONT CONT Francis Gaines was awarded two land grants totaling 1200 acres of land in Elbert Co. GA. Prior to moving to GA in 1792 and after the Revolutionary War ending Apr. 19, 1783, he received a grant of 400 acres of land on North Fork Buck Island Creek, Albemarle Co. VA on July 20, 1784 for his Revolutionary War service in that VA county. CONT CONT The burial ground for this Gaines family is located on a knoll between Rock Branch and Taliaferro Gaines creek branches in Frank Alexander's pasture. Just across the creek, the Francis Gaines house stood on another knoll. There are ten graves, some legible and some non-legible, while others are unmarked. The local chapter of the SAR (Son's of the American Revolution) through money raised by Francis's descendant's, erected a monument on his grave five feet high and three feet wide. CONT CONT Francis Gaines bought 175 acres of land on Coldwater Creek, Elbert Co. GA Oct. 7, 1797 from Hezekiah and Rebecca Bailey for $150.00 bounded by Horatio Marbury and H. Bailey. Witnessed by John Cunningham. This land was sold Aug. 17, 1805 to R.T. Gaines bounded by William Gaines. (Elbert Co. GA Deed Bk G, P. 142 for Puchase and Deed Bk J, P. 178 for sale)
