Hierum (aka Hiram, Hierom, Herrorum, Heironeum) Gaines was born about 1730/1731 in Albemarle Co., Virginia.
[1][2][3]
It is generally agreed that Hiram married Margaret “Peggy” Taliaferro (1732-1773) in Virginia
[3]
about 1750.
[2]
(Her parentage is somewhat in question, however.)
[1]
She died in Virginia before the family moved to Georgia. [3]
It appears that Hiram Sr. and his son, Hiram Jr., rendered service in the Continental Army. They were both listed as participating in the Georgia Land Lottery in 1806, and that date is the last date Hiram Sr.’s name appears in public records. Other Gaines relatives participated in the lottery as well, and at least Hiram Jr. won acreage in Elbert County, Ga., where the family later settled.
[3]
Hiram Gaines Sr. and Peggy had the following children:[3]
The first record on Hierom Gaines of Albemarle Co., Virginia is dated 23 Dec 1748 wherein he is a witness to a sale. [1][2]
He owned 250 acres purchased on 14 May 1751 in Albemarle County, Virginia. [2]

Hiram Gaines and Richard Gaines are listed as signers to a Declaration of Independence in Albemarle, Virginia, dated 21 Apr 1779. The original is preserved in the rooms of the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond. [4]
Hierom Gaines had personal property recorded in Albemarle Co., VA from 1782 - 1792 after which he and his sons, William, Francis, Henry, and Hierom Jr. removed to GA. There were some deed records in Albermarle Co., VA., involving Hiram and his sons; [1]
“Feb. 15, 1782. William Gaines bought 400 acres of land on Plum TreeCreek... Witnesses: Heiram Gaines and David Nimmo.” (Witnesses were Heirom Gaines Sr. and his son in law, David Nimmo. William Gaines was a son of Heirom Gaines.)

Hierome Gaines appeared on census in 1785 from Albemarle County, Virginia State Census. HEADS OF FAMILIES, VIRGINIA 1785, shows him with four white souls. It also shows sons Richard, Francis and Humphrey. [2]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Hiram by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Hiram:
I have no evidence that Hiram Gaines was the son of Richard Gaines, but I did find where Richard's brother Robert Gaines had a grandson named Hiram Gaines who was born in 1730 in Albemarle Co., Virginia, married Peggy Taliaferro and died 1806 in Elbert, Georgia. I believe his father was named Richard. My Richard Gaines was the son of James Gaines and did not have a son named Hiram.
