Thomas W. Gaines was most likely buried on his own land in Stokes County, North Carolina, along with his wife. They died just days apart. He was at one time listed in the Locust Grove Cemetery in Stokes County, but that is highly suspect. The earliest burial there is 1866 and that is suspect as well with no grave marker photo. Most of the burials in the Locust Grove Cemetery are over a hundred years later.

Thomas' middle name may have been William. His father was William Henry, so it would make sense that the W. used in sources would stand for William. If anyone has a document confirming the William, please contact the manager of this memorial.

Thomas was a Corporal in the 7th Virginia Infantry Company in the Revolutionary War. He enlisted Aug 30, 1776 as a member of the Culpeper County Minutemen. He was a member of several regiments during his three year enlistment, which is on record in the North Carolina Archives, Raleigh, North Carolina. It is said that he was with George Washington at Valley Forge as a young man.

Thomas married Susanah Dabney Strother and their children were:

  • Phillip Gaines
  • James Strother Gaines
  • Richard Gaines
  • Elizabeth Strother Gaines
  • William Dabney Gaines
  • Henry Pendleton Gaines
  • Frances Henry Gaines
  • Susannah Dabney Gaines
  • George Washington Gaines
  • Francis Thornton Gaines.

Thomas' wife, Susanah Dabney Strother, was a direct descendant of Cornelius Dabney, the Indian Interpreter for Cockacoeske, Queen of the Pamunkey, who was a grand-niece of Pocahontas, and married Cockacoeske's daughter Susannah as his second wife.[6]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

Gaines-967 and Gaines-74 appear to represent the same person because: the biographies are the same, primary sources for dates are needed, the parents are the same, also

Thomas Gaines with a daughter Margaret appears to be brother, not son, of William. See Gaines-1306.

Gaines-1615 and Gaines-74 appear to represent the same person because: Now that Gaines-74 is sourced and the data for his uncle has been removed, the profiles are similar enough to merge. The correct parents are attached on Gaines-1615, please make sure they are included on the final merged profile.

Per SAR Membership 42135 and SAR Membership 79954, the parents of this Thomas are William Gaines and Isabella Pendleton.

This profile appears to be a mixture of Thomas, that married Susanna Strother and his uncle Thomas (born 1738), the brother of his father William. Most of the data in the biography does not match the data on the profile. This discussion has gone on long enough with resolution, I am going to fix this profile.

Gaines-1615 and Gaines-74 do not represent the same person because: Too many differences, it appears that, while the names are the same, they are two different people.

Gaines-1615 and Gaines-74 appear to represent the same person because: intended to be the same person, neither set of parents are proven, nor do any sources support either set.

The listed parents are the grandparents of Gaines-967. If the genealogy is correct, the two Thomas profiles are for uncle and nephew.

Thomas' parents didn't come from my records; another person added them. Sorry, I can't help with who these parents are.

please see the comments I posted on Gaines-74 (set in an unmerged match with this profile because they have different parents)

hmm.. I just realized you _did_ have some sources I could check (well, one) & the FindaGrave link shows the same parents as Gaines-1615.

So, who are the parents attached to this profile?

posted by Liz (Noland) Shifflett
this profile and Gaines-1615 are married to same woman but have different birth/death & different parents - I've set them in an unmerged match.

Can you add your sources?

Thanks!

Gaines-206 and Gaines-74 appear to represent the same person because: same wife (merge proposed)
