Biography

Lewis was born September 19, 1809, the son of James Gaines and Judith Easley.

In 1850, he and his wife Mary A.J. lived in Ocala, Marion County, Florida with their children Swepson Stephens, Richard G. Stephens (possibly Mary's from a previous marriage?), Mary H., Lewis P., James S., Benjamin, Ruhannah, Ida, and two young men named Aaron Wooly and John Q. Wells[1].

He died December 30, 1860, and was buried in Middleburg Methodist Church Cemetery, Middleburg, Clay County, Florida

Son of James Strother Gaines and Judith Easley, related to the great War of 1812 General Edmund Pendleton Gaines, as well as the well-known Governor of Alabama, George Strother Gaines. The Strother, Gaines and Pendleton families were very prolific in VA and in the rest of the South both before and after the Revolutionary War.
