Biography

Hierum (aka Hiram, Hierom, Herrorum, Heironeum) Gaines was born about 1730/1731 in Albemarle Co., Virginia. [1] [2] [3] It is generally agreed that Hiram married Margaret “Peggy” Taliaferro (1732-1773) in Virginia [3] about 1750. [2] (Her parentage is somewhat in question, however.) [1] She died in Virginia before the family moved to Georgia. [3]

It appears that Hiram Sr. and his son, Hiram Jr., rendered service in the Continental Army. They were both listed as participating in the Georgia Land Lottery in 1806, and that date is the last date Hiram Sr.’s name appears in public records. Other Gaines relatives participated in the lottery as well, and at least Hiram Jr. won acreage in Elbert County, Ga., where the family later settled. [3]

Hiram Gaines Sr. and Peggy had the following children: [3]

  1. Hiram Jr., d. 1815, m. 1792 Ann Thompson;
  2. Richard, b. 1752, m. Ann Garth;
  3. Humphrey, b. 1755, m. 1779 Martha Bowen;
  4. William Shanklin, b. 1757, m. 1785 Milly Banks;
  5. Ann Pittman, b. 1758, m. ca 1765 David Nimmo;
  6. Francis, b. 1759, m. Judy Lively;
  7. Henry, b. 1761, m. Martha White;
  8. Martha, b. 1762, m. Henry Harper.

You might want to add this as reference to Hiram and his wife Margaret. Scroll down to page 141 and read from bottom of page. Lots on the Gains and Taliaferros. Seem to have intermarried with the Lewis Family. https://occgs.com/projects/rescue/family_files/files/LEWIS%20Family.pdf

I have no evidence that Hiram Gaines was the son of Richard Gaines, but I did find where Richard's brother Robert Gaines had a grandson named Hiram Gaines who was born in 1730 in Albemarle Co., Virginia, married Peggy Taliaferro and died 1806 in Elbert, Georgia. I believe his father was named Richard. My Richard Gaines was the son of James Gaines and did not have a son named Hiram.
