There is no proof as to who her parents were. There are many trees that have a John Gates as her father, but there are no sources or proof to that contention.
There is no proof of her birth location. It could have been in Virginia or elsewhere.
Given the age of her husband and of her children, it is likely that she was born about 1675.
Susannah's will was written by her on May 31, 1743 in Goochland County, Virginia and it was proved on September 20, 1743. Therefore, her death occurred during the summer of 1743.
Birth
There was a Susannah Gates christened, Oct.19, 1651, St. Mary's Aldermary with St. Thomas the Apostle, London England. Parents listed on record, John Gates and Susanna Gates[1][2] However, it seems unlikely that this is Susannah Maxey since that would mean she started having children at age 45 and her last child was born at age 68. It seems more likely that she was born at least 25 years later and similar in age to her husband.
Death
Based on the date of her will (written and proved), Susannah died between May 31, 1743 and September 20, 1743 in Goochland, Virginia Colony. FindAGrave says that she is buried in the Huguenot Cemetery in Manakin, Virginia.[3] However, there is no tombstone, burial record or source provided. At least two sources [4][5] indicate that there are no Maxeys buried in the Manakin Huguenot Cemetery.
Parents
Gates is not the proven name of Susannah - it has been suggested that it could be Gates/Gaites, or could be something entirely different. Some facts that may support Susannah's maiden name being Gates:
One of the witnesses to Susannah Maxey's will was James Gates, probably the son of John Gates, both of whom were mentioned in a court petition of William Bradshaw directed to Susannah's son, Edward Maxey, Jr., in 1724. This link between the Gates and Maxey families gives credence to the claim of some genealogists that Susannah's maiden name was Gates.
William Bradshaw by petition sets forth that John Gates bequeathed the care of his two sons William and James to Charles Snugs, who did appoint the petitioner his sole executor and residuary legatee. Edward Maxey, Jr. hath seduced from him the said children, and praying they be ordered to return to him. Court says he has no right to guardianship of the said children. Church wardens of Henrico Parish bind out William and James Gates, sons of John Gates, dec'd. [6]
Also, a William Gaites is listed as owning land next to Susannah and her husband Edward Maxey (see Map attached to this profile)[7]
Relationship to Sir Thomas Gates
There are also trees that say she is the granddaughter of Sir Thomas Gates, the early Governor of Virginia. That has been proven to be not true.
Sir Thomas Gates had one son Stephen, who was left in England when Sir Thomas and his wife traveled to Virginia. His wife was one of many that died en-route to Virginia. He never married again, left to go back to England in 1614 and never returned. He died in 1622 in the Netherlands.
Thomas Gates of "The Swan"
Another Thomas gate arrived in Jamestown on the Swan in 1610. He married Elizabeth and some tree's have these 2 as the grandparents of Susannah. Thomas and Elizabeth are listed on the 1624 tax roll. I emailed the Jamestown Society and asked why they were not on their head of household list. I got back an email that said that there was no record in the Jamestown records, of any children born to this couple. And no-one who claims to be descended from them can provide proof.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Susannah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Susannah:
A 1651 birthdate seems highly unlikely. This would mean her first child was born when she was age 45 and her last child was born at age 68.
Other sources listed in this profile show a birthdate of 1677 and 1678, which would seem much more likely.
If the birthdate is uncertain or in conflict, research notes should be added.
Gates-5524 and Gates-187 appear to represent the same person because: These are clearly the same person. Some recently added duplicates on were created. On WIkiTree there should only one instance of each person.
No source given for a marriage date of 1710 which would have put her as already the mother of 5 before she actually married Edward. Removed marriage date.
Other sources listed in this profile show a birthdate of 1677 and 1678, which would seem much more likely. If the birthdate is uncertain or in conflict, research notes should be added.
Has a lot of reading to it and states that her parents are Daughter of Nathaniel Hales and Susannah Busby
Place of Burial: Manakin, Goochland County, Virginia
