Notes for Nelson Gay:
Nelson was born near Rush Creek in what was then Clay County, Kentucky...he built a home near the Turkey Branch and lived there for 60 to 70 years and never moved but his address changed from Clay County to Perry County to Leslie County.
In the "Perry County, Kentucky, A History" By Hazard Kentucky Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, copyright 1953 it states: " Among the families prominent in the early days of the settling of the Buckhorn area may be listed the following names: Johnson, Amis, Anderson, Baker, Barger, Bowling, Burton, Callahan, Deaton, Fox, Gay, Gross, Hacker, Lewis, McDaniel, McIntosh, Riley, Sebastion, Smith, Turner, White and York. In 1927, Asbury Johnson, while a graduate student at Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee. started work on a paper entitled, "A Brief History of various Families around Buckhorn, Kentucky" the work was ceased because of his ill health and subsequent death. Before the death of Luther, his brother, in 1951 obtained some of his material for study......An interesting story is told of the pleasant relationship between Jerry Smith, of Buckhorn, and Nelson Gay of Gay's Creek, which is six miles above Buckhorn on the road which now leads to Hazard, via Chavies and Grapevine Creek. It seems that Nelson Gay had a drum at his home on Turkey Branch, just above Gay's Creek and Jerry Smith had a Bugle at Buckhorn. The two men used to signal to each other these six miles until "Marshall's Rebels" took Nelsons drum during the Civil War.
