Biography

Margaret Gernon[1]

Parents: John Gernon, Knight, of East Thorpe, Essex and his first wife, Alice ____,[1] widow of John Bigot[2]
Born: c1350[2] (age 34 in 1384)[3] Leer, co. Essex[4] or Leeys Manor, Essex[citation needed]
  • "Margaret, daughter and co-heiress of John Gernon, Knight, of Lees in Essex"[5]
  • Margaret's sister, Joan (Gernon) Botetourt, was born "1328 in Lees Mauer, Essex"[6]
Married: John de Peyton, Knight, of Peyton Hall (in Boxford), Essex,[1] who "by her became Lord of the Manors of East Thorpe and Wicken, Cambs., and of Bakewell, Derbyshire."[5]
Children:
  • John Peyton, "died at infancy and was buried at Wicken"[5]
  • John Peyton, married Joan Sutton (died c1404, "in his mother’s lifetime and so did not inherit any of the Gernon Estates . . . .")[5]
  • Thomas Peyton[7]
  • Robert Peyton[8][7]
Died: 6 Jun 1413,[2] Wicken, Essex, England[citation needed]
Margaret died a widow and was buried at "Wicken, co. Cambridge (Inq.p.m. 2 Henry V)"[2]
A note in Peytons of Virginia II (POV II) about Sir John de Peyton questions his date of death, saying in part: "Waters and Hayden give his death in 1394, but The Visitation of Suffolk chart states that he was living in 10 Henry IV, 1409. The same chart gives his wife’s death in 1414."[5]
In addition, POV II says that Sir John de Peyton was buried at Stoke Neyland and Margaret his wife (died 1405) was buried at Wicken.[5]

The Hundred of Lexden

"This hundred is bounded westward by Hinckford and Witham hundreds; eastward, by Tendring and Winstree; southward, by parts of Witham, Winstree, and Thurstable; and on the north by the river Stour, which parts the counties of Essex and Suffolk."[9]

"In the time of King John, Ralph Gernon held it . . . and was succeeded by his son William, who died in 1258, and left this possession to his son Ralph, from whom it went to Sir William Gernon, in 1327. John Gernon granted it, in 1350, to William, son of John Gernon, and Elizabeth his wife; and, in 1383, Sir John Gernon held this hundred of the King: he left, by Alice his wife, two daughters; Margaret, wife of Sir John de Peyton; and Joanna. Margaret had it for her property; and it was entailed upon her son, John Peyton, and Grace, his wife; then on Thomas and Robert, two of their other sons. Margaret died in possession of it in 1414, and was succeeded by her grandson John Peyton. Robert Peyton, in 1536, sold this hundred of Lexden to Sir Thomas Audley . . . ."[9]

oh hey - ignore my previous post. I just checked. There is a trail (albeit undeveloped) to Margaret and her dad from Gateway Ancestor Robert Peyton (and on to surety de_Vere-309 at least).

So... I'll switch Margaret over to the Magna Carta Project-management.

Hi! I added the project account. I tried to add WikiTree-80 as manager first, but WikiTree didn't accept the e-mail I had for it.

I'm undecided about whether or not she & her father need to be PPP/project-managed. I was going to remove PPP when I was intending to remain manager, but I must have had a shift in my tree somewhere - they're no longer lineal ancestors (I try to keep my watchlist to a reasonable size by only managing lineal ancestors or collaterals I've created).

Over to y'all!

Cheers, Liz
