Biography

It has been said that Richard Devereaux Gilliam is the son Walter Gilliam and Mary Devereaux and that he married Dorothy Pembroke.

This claim is riddled with error.

First, there is no documentation supporting a marriage between a Walter Gilliam and Mary Devereaux. See the profile of Walter Gilliam.

Second, there is no documentation supporting a marriage between a Richard Devereaux Gilliam and a Dorothy Pembroke. In fact, there is no documentation that Sir Henry Herbert, 2nd Earl of Pembroke and Lady Mary Sidney Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, had a daughter Dorothy.

The following Timeline has been given.

It too is riddled with error.

1. William Gillum Sr. born 1720, Bristol, VA married Mary Jarrett born 5 May 1724 VA, parents were Robert Jarratt and Sarah Elizabeth Bradley.
This is incorrect.
Mary Jarratt is the daughter of Devereaux Jarratt and Elizabeth Wingfield. (see research of Wingfield Society) not Robert Jarratt and Sarah Elizabeth Bradley. William Gilliam was likely born In New Kent County, Colony of Virginia and a grandson of Richard Gilliam of New Kent. He was not born in Bristol which was not settled until around 1765.

2. John Gillum born 1666 Bristol, VA married Lucy Henry born 1690 Surry, VA married in Lunenburg Co, VA, John died Gainsville, NC. Lucy's father was Patrick Henry.
This is incorrect.
Again, Bristol was not settled until around 1765. A John Gillum born 1666 did not marry a Lucy Henry the daughter of Patrick Henry. Neither the Reverend nor the Orator Patrick Henry had a daughter named Lucy. The Will of the Rev. Patrick Henry dated 1777 reveals he had a daughter Jane that married a John Gilliam of Prince George County. There is no Gainsville, NC. It is possible that the author meant Greenville or Granville.

3. John Gillum Jr born 1635 VA married Margaret Henshaw This is incorrect.
A John Gilliam did marry a Margary, not a Margaret who has been said to be a Henshaw.

4. John Gillum Sr born 1614 Gravesend, Kent, England, wife unknown, died 1651, Norfolk VA. John and his brother William, sons of Sir Richard Gilliam, came to America in 1635 aboard the Ship "The Constance" with the Royal Commission to survey and map the Dominion of Virginia.
This is incorrect.
A John Gilliam and an assumed brother Thomas arrived in Virginia in 1635 on the ship George. A William also arrived in 1635 on the ship Constance. There in no documentation that they had a Royal Commission to survey and map Virginia. A Lt. Capt. John Gilliam did die in Lower Norfolk in 1651. There is no documentation that he is one and the same John Gilliam that arrived in 1635.

5. Sir Richard Devereaux Gillum born 1582 Gravesend, Kent, England. He married Dorothy, born 1584 in England. Daughter of the Earl of Pembroke.
This is incorrect.
There is no documentation supporting a marriage between a Richard Devereaux Gilliam and a Dorothy Pembroke. In fact, there is no documentation that Sir Henry Herbert, 2nd Earl of Pembroke and Lady Mary Sidney Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, had a daughter Dorothy.

6. Walter Viscount Hereford Gilliam
This is incorrect.
There was no Walter Gilliam, Viscount of Hereford.[1]
