Biography

Several individuals have been conflated into the John Gilliam who married Margery and who was the father of Hinchea, Charles, John and Elizabeth.

One was John Gilliam who arrived on the George on 21 Aug 1635, age 21 with brother Thomas, age 18.
On 21 Aug 1635, the ship "The George" departed London for Virginia. Jo. Severne, Master. [1]

It appears the above John and Thomas are the John and Thomas Guilham who on 20 Aug 1642 Joseph Royal received a headright patent for their transport. [2]

IF John Gilliam who arrived on the George, age 21 was the spouse of Margery and father of Elizabeth, Hinchea, John and Charles, he would have been born about 1614. And at the least 41 when he started his family and over 50 at the birth of his last child. While not impossible, to start a family at age 40 in Colonial Virginia is not the typical.

The second is John the eldest son of John Gilham of Lynhaven Parish, Lower Norfolk who left an Estate in 1651. It appears eldest son John was not of age in 1651 for the Estate was administered by Roger Fountayne.

The eldest son John of John Gilham of Lynhaven Parish, Lower Norfolk could chronologically be the spouse of Margery and father of Elizabeth, Hinchea, John and Charles. However John Gilham of Lynhaven Parish, Lower Norfolk lived a considerable distance from where the family of John and Margary lived--not just "across the river" as has been stated. Lynhaven Parish was over 80 miles from Bristol Parish. One must also assume that eldest son John lived to maturity and removed to Bristol Parish. There are no known connections between the associates of John Gilham of Lynhaven Parish, Lower Norfolk and the associates of John and Margery of Bristol Parish.

John Gilliam and Margery

Southside Virginia Genealogies by John W. Pritchett,[3] states that the parents of John Gilliam and "not identified."

It has been said that Margery was the daughter of Thomas Henshaw and Catherine Gower. This does not appear to be the case. See Margery's profile.

John Gilliam and Margery were the parents of

  1. Elizabeth Gilliam
  2. John Gilliam
  3. Henshaw/Hinshiah Gilliam
  4. Charles Gilliam

Notes for Capt Lt John Gilham of Lynhaven Parish Lower Norfolk

It does not appear Capt Lt John Gilham of Lynhaven Parish Lower Norfolk has any connection to John Gilliam who married Margery.

"Capt. Lt. John Gilliam died in Lower Norfolk County, VA late in 1651 and his will was probated in January and February 1651/2. He left everything to his brother-in-law and executor, Roger Fountayne, with the exception of his rapier and gold ring which went to his eldest son John Gilliam. No record has been found of his coming to America. It has been said that Capt. Lt. John Gilliam was commissioned by the King to survey the Virginia Colony.

Any association with the Devereaux family is purely fictitious. It appears that Worth S. Ray is the originator of the Devereaux tradition also. He states in his Mecklenburg Signers that "after much and prolonged research the writer has concluded there were two parent stems of the GILLIAM family in early colonial Virginia, headed by William Devereaux GILLIAM and a John GILLIAM, branded by tradition only as brothers."
The Devereaux name became associated with the GILLIAM name after William GILLIAM married Mary Jarratt, the daughter of Devereaux Jarratt. Mary was from New Kent and likely married William around the mid 1740’s.

It has also been said that Capt. Lt. John Gilliam married a Miss Fountayn. This is based upon the fact that "brother in law" Roger Fountayne administered the estate of John Gilham. It should be noted in Colonial Virginia "brother in law" had the sense of "stepbrother" instead of the modern sense of "brother-in-law." It has been said Miss Fontayne was "Amy." There is no known evidence to support this claim.

John Gilliam sued the estate of Anthony Tall for 1,100 pounds of tobacco in December of 1659 in Charles City Co, VA. In 1660 he served on the Grand Jury and witnessed the will of Thomas Lowe. Four years later, John was sued by William Hunt, attorney for the Anthony Tall estate, for illegal detention of a servant belonging to Tall. The suit was dismissed in August of 1664 when John surrendered the servant. The month before this dismissal, John bought 1,300 acres from Edward Hill. In June of 1673 Thomas Mallory, one of the executors of the Thomas Bridges estate was ordered to "deliver one gunn unto John Gilliam."

However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

The city of "Bristol, Virginia," in the far southwestern corner of the state, was not settled for a hundred years or more after 1635. Presumably the "birthplace" shown here ought to be Bristol Parish, in Charles City County (tidewater Virginia).

Gilliam-228 and Gilliam-118 appear to represent the same person because: Gilliam-228 was created through a Gedcom import in 2011. The profile was apparently supposed to be the John Gilliam represented by Gilliam-118. All the children and wives hav been cleaned up. The only way to handle Gilliam-228 at this point is to merge him with Gilliam-118 and keep only the information from 118. Please approved this merge so we can get rid of this profile.
