Biography

Sir John Greene is said to have been born about 1408 (some trees say 1404) in Northamptonshire, England and to have died in 1486 in Gillingham, Dorset, England. Some trees say he is the son of Sir Thomas Greene and Mary Talbot; others that he is the son of Henry Greene and Matilda Mauduit.

No contemporary sources have been found for a person of the surname Green(e) living in Gillingham in the 1400s. There is also no evidence of a connection between the Greene family of Gillingham in the mid 1500s and the Greene family of Drayton or Greene's Norton (Northamptonshire) in the early 1400s, as would be suggested by this profile.

This profile seems to be based in part on John Greene (abt.1387-1433), although the birth and death dates on this profile do not match that John Greene.

Research Notes

Uncertain Existence

No contemporary evidence can be found for a John Green(e) living in Gillingham, Dorset, in the 1400s. The earliest Greene that has been found in Gillingham is recorded in a 1525 Dorset Subsidy Roll. This profile and others for Gillingham Greenes in the 1400s appear in many online family trees and some printed works from the 1900s, but these do not provide reliable sources for their information. So is there a new updated profile for the corrected John Greene yet? and who are they correct parents of this person? Thanks.

The new profile is John Greene (c1387-1433). It is uncertain that the person in this profile actually existed, as despite detailed searches, no contemporary evidence for a John Greene (or indeed anyone with the surname Greene) in Gillingham has been found. I have updated this profile to reflect this uncertainty.

Okay, so is there a current father for Greene-490 "the fugitive" or is that line broken now? I was researching the line in "The Greene family and its branches from A.D. 861 to A.D. 1904" book and it gets a bit murky right around that generation.

I've now completed the research on this profile. While it contains elements that pertain to two real people, there is no evidence in contemporary records for the existence of a John Greene who moved from Northamptonshire to Dorset, as described in this profile.

I've written an "alternative bio" under Research Notes for the first real person (John Greene of Hardwick, Northamptonshire). I've also found a good History of Parliament source for the second, from which a reasonable bio can be constructed (John Greene of Sandwich, Kent, MP).

After discussing with others in the England Project Managed Profiles Team, the plan is to create new profiles for the real John Greenes and transfer the wife and children currently connected to this profile (who are real people) to the new profile for John Greene of Hardwick, where there are reliable sources to support this connection.

This will leave this profile for John Greene-1200 with the uncertain/disproven existence template and appropriate explanation to alert people to the problem. Thanks

I plan to update this profile on behalf of the England Project, adding reliable sources and revising the biography in accordance with these. I'm particularly interested in any evidence that the John Greene born in Northamptonshire is the same person as the John Greene who died in Dorset. Thanks!

Greene-4061 and Greene-1200 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate profiles with same dates married to same woman.

The merged profile will then need sources.

I propose to disconnect Henry Green and Matilda Mauduit as parents as they both died 9 years before John was born. John also has a duplicate profile married to the same woman - I propose a merge of these.

Henry has a son, John, listed in his profile. Could he have had a son and this one was wrongly connected?

Is there a pre-1500 approved England Team person who might seek correct parents for this John Green-4061. There are numerous Green/es in the UK and States who may be descended from this John Green and like to know further ancestry. His children look like 'gentry', if I'm using the work properly, who married 'gentry', e.g., de Vere.

This profile remains unsourced (online tree) and will be detached as a child of Mary Talbot and Thomas Greene. They had only one son, Thomas.

Parents are both shown as dying in 1399, yet Thomas is born in 1408...

There are no authoritative sources referenced for this information. Nice write-up's but they read like they come from the Lora LaMance material which has been discredited.
Re: Serious Data Issue, Error in Parents. Per Douglass Richardson, Vol.2, pg154 in 'Plantagenet Ancestry': MARY TALBOT & THOMAS GREENE (1370-1417) "they had one son, Thomas Knt.." Mary went on to outlive her husband.
De Greene-56 and Greene-1200 are not ready to be merged because: Hello! There are many similarities between tnese two profiles, howeverm there is a glaring conflict with parantage. I would suggest a needs for further study before these profiles can be merged.
De Greene-56 and Greene-1200 do not represent the same person because: Mothers, fathers are different; and also note differing spans of age.
De Greene-56 and De Grene-19 appear to represent the same person because: Hello! I believe these two profiles represent the same person. Could you take a look, and if you agree, complete the merge?

Thank you, Lynden Raber Rodriguez
