Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
John Greer was a Maryland colonist.
This profile is part of the Greer Name Study.

Birth

John Greer was probably born in about 1688 in Baltimore County, Province of Maryland. He was the son of James Greer and Ann Taylor.[1]

John's father died before 1700, when his stepfather Lawrence Richardson was identified in the Baltimore County rent rolls as holding the 75 acres of Arthur's Choice in trust "for the orphants of James Greear."[2]

First Marriage

John married first Sarah Day, reportedly on 4 March 1704/5 in Joppa, Baltimore County, Province of Maryland.[3] The original source for that date is unclear, but Sarah was still unmarried and identified as "Sarah Day" when her father made his will on 1 December 1704[4] and her mother identified her as "my daughter Sarah Greer the wife of John Greer" in her will made on 20 October 1730.[5] The first known children of John Greer and Sarah Day were not born until about 1710 or later, so a better source confirming this early marriage date would be helpful.

Land Transactions 1714-1720

On 4 March 1714, John Greer conveyed the 75 acres in Arthur's Choice which he had inherited from his father to Walter Bosley. Ann "Harriott," his mother, and Sara his wife, both acknowledged waiver of their dower rights.[6]

A few years later, John Greer acquired at least three tracts of land along the Great Falls of the Gunpowder River in Baltimore County, Province of Maryland, from 1718 to 1720. These include:

  • Greers Park (100 acres), surveyed 3 Feb 1718[7]
  • Greers Improvement (58 acres), surveyed 24 Jan 1720[8]
  • Greers Discovery (92 acres), surveyed 24 Jan 1720[9]

Depositions 1735-1743

John Greer testified in several Land Commission proceedings between 1732-1743 which shed light on his age and provide additional confirmation of his mother's identity. These include:

  • 1732 - Land Commission on Heathcote's Cottage - John Grear testified he was abt 47 yrs old and had been informed about 15 yrs prior by John Taylor concerning the properties at issue; his uncle John had been living for many years by that time along Gunpowder River.[10]
  • 28 Apr 1738 - Land Commission on Gassoway's Ridge - John Grear testified he was abt 50 yrs old[11]
  • 12 May 1739 - Land Commission on Bosley's Expectation - John Greer testified he was about 50 yrs old and refers to his "unkill" James Smithers, who was living along Gunpowder River in abt 1699[12]
  • 25 Jul 1743 - Land Commission on Thompson's Lott - John Greer testified he was abt 55 yrs old and that John Taylor, if still alive, would be about 78[13]

Scandal

Cohabitation of John Greer and Cloe Jones

As reflected below, John Greer and Sarah Day raised a family of at least nine children between about 1710 and 1727. However, in the early 1740s, their marriage ended unhappily. On 1 November 1743, John and Cloe Jones were summoned to appear before a meeting of the Vestry of St. John's Parish-Joppa scheduled for 29 November to answer charges that they were "unlawfully cohabbitting together."[14] It is unclear whether Sarah and John ever formally divorced, but the lease described below suggests that they may have separated in about November 1743 and Sarah went to live with her son Aquilla around the same time as this vestry summons was issued.

Separation of John Greer and Sarah Day

There is a reportedly a lease dated 16 November 1743 in which Charles Carroll of Annapolis, Maryland, leased to John and Sarah's son Aquilla a 100 acre tract in Baltimore County call "Chilimara" (but spelled in various ways in different documents), for the use of "Aquilla Greer, Elizabeth Greer, and Sarah Greer," and elsewhere in the lease Aquilla reportedly covenants "for himself, his heirs and assigns, the mother..."[15][16][17] Although some researchers believe it refers to Aquila's daughter, many believe that the "Sarah Greer" referred to in the lease was this Sarah (Day) Greer, separated from her husband John Greer by 1743 as a result of the scandal described above and living by then with her son Aquilla.

Bastardy Charges Against Cloe Jones

In the August 1745 term of the Baltimore County Court, Cloe Jones was called to answer charges of Bastardy, to which she pled guilty and for which she was ordered to pay a 30 shilling fine. John Greer, present at the court proceeding, undertook to pay this fine on her behalf. Following is a transcription of the docket entry by Henry C. Peden Jr. FMGS provided to Bea O'Quin in February 2002, copied verbatim (misspelling of words included and not corrected):

Lord Proprietary agst. Cloe Jones} Bastardy confest: In this case there was issue a capis directed to the Sherriff of Baltimore County against the said Cloe to answer into his Lordship concerning a basterd child latly born of her body as by a presentment therefore found against her last court. Whereupon now on this first Tuesday and sixth day of August Anno Domini one thousand seven hundred and forty-five at the Town of Joppa here comes the said sheriff (to wit John Risteau, gent.) who returnes that he hath taken the body of the said Cloe which said Cloe accordingly appears and being askt as the manner is how she will acquit her selfe of the premises say that she is guilty thereof and pray that the sum of 30 shilling may be accepted as a fine in metigation of the presentment which the Lords of this province doth inflect on such offenders, &tc. It is therefor commanded by the Court here that the said Cloe be find the sum of 30 shillings for the offence aforesaid and that she the said Cloe, be taken, &tc. Thereupon the said Cloe is discharged upon paying to the several officers of this court their several and respective fees due to them from her by occation of the payment thereof thereupon John Greer here present in Court undertakes to pay the same in case the said Cloe doth not.[18]

The court record does not identify the child or the father of the child, but it appears likely that John was the father and it is possible this child was the "John Junior, son of Cloe" named in John's 1752 will as discussed below.

Land Transactions 1747-1748

Between 1747-1748, John Greer sold all three tracts of land that he had acquired near the Great Falls of the Gunpowder River during the period from 1718-1720.[19][20][21]

After selling these properties in Baltimore County, John Greer migrated with Cloe to Onslow County, Province of North Carolina, where John made his will on 27 April 1752.[22]

Second Marriage

John Greer and Cloe Jones appear to have married after the bastardy proceeding but before he made his will on 1 April 1752, when he identifies Cloe as "my Dearly Beloved Wife Cloe Greer."[22]

Will

John Greer made his will in Onslow County, Province of North Carolina, on 27 April 1752.[22] In it, he names the following family members:

  • six sons (bequeathed 12 pence each):
    • John Greer
    • Moses Greer
    • Aquilly Greer
    • William Greer
    • Benjamin Greer
    • Joseph Greer
  • three daughters (bequeathed 12 pence each):
    • Sarah Armstrong
    • Anne Starkey
    • Elizabeth Davis
  • son John Greer Junr, son of Cloe Greer, bequeathed
    • One Negro Man called Jack
    • two hunting guns
    • Carpinter's tools, gun stock tools, and other tools
  • wife Cloe Greer, bequeathed personal estate & made sole executrix.

The will makes clear that John Greer Junior, the son of Cloe Greer, had not yet reached the age of 18 when the will was made.

The will was proved in Onslow County, Province of North Carolina, on 7 July 1752.[22]

Death

John died in Onslow County, Province of North Carolina, after making his will on 27 April 1752 and before this will was proved there on 7 July 1752.[22]

Probate of John Greer Estate

The extant papers in the probate file for John Greer do not mention Cloe but do mention John's "child John," presumably the "John Junr, son of Cloe" named in the older John's will. A settlement statement which appears to have been prepared in 1753 by Arthur Averett (identified as the Executor of the estate), but which may also reflect later edits in 1758, indicates that John Greer's estate was charged 24£ for four years boarding & clothing of the child (6£ per year for four years) plus an additional 5£ for one year of boarding and schooling. These expenses, together with other incidental expenses of the estate, were funded by the hiring out of the "Negro Jack" bequeathed to John Junior for 5 years at £8 per year.[23] If John Junior was the child who gave rise to the bastardy proceedings in 1745, he would have been about 7-8 years old when his father died in 1752, and thus about 13 after the 5 years of boarding and schooling provided for by the settlement of his father's estate. Age 13 would be the typical age for beginning an apprenticeship for a trade such as carpentry. Thus, it seems likely that John Junr was the child of John and Cloe born in Baltimore County in about 1745.

Children

Children of John Greer and Sarah Day

Children of John Greer and Sarah Day include:

  1. James (possibly), b. abt 1711, m. Elizabeth Wright[24][25] d. bef. 5 Aug 1742.[26]
  2. John, b. abt 1713[27][28]
  3. Moses b. abt 1715[29][28] m. Mary Bayley[30]
  4. Aquilla, b. abt 1719[31][28]
  5. Ann b. 15 Feb 1721 (twin),[32] m. John Starkey[33][28]
  6. Sarah b. 15 Feb 1721 (twin),[34] m. (__) Armstrong[28]
  7. William b. abt 1723,[28]
  8. Elizabeth b. abt 1725[28] m. Jacob Davis[35]
  9. Benjamin b. 6 Jan 1727/8,[36][28]
  10. Joseph b. abt 1729[28] m. Ann Low[37]

All of these children except James are named in John Greer's will made in Onslow County, North Carolina, in 1752.[28] James died in 1742, long before the will was made.

Children of John Greer and Cloe Jones

The only known child of John Greer and Cloe Jones was the "John Junior" named in John's will:

  1. John Greer, b. abt 1745[22][23]

The estimated birth date of abt 1745 assumes that John Junior was was the illegitimate child who gave rise to the Baltimore County bastardy proceedings against Cloe Jones.

Slaves

John Greer bequeathed the following slave to his son John Junior, the son of Cloe, in his 1752 will:[22]

  1. Jack

Research Notes

Estimated Birth Date

The birth date of "about 1688" is based on the ages he gave in the Land Commission depositions cited above between 1738-1743. He also gave a deposition in 1738 concerning a rattlesnake bite he received, in which he reportedly testified that he was 50 years old at the time of the deposition.[38]

Note that in the 1732 deposition, he testifies he was about 47 in 1732, which would indicate a birth year of 1685. However, the majority of the sources point to 1688.

Date of Marriage to Cloe

A prior version of this profile gave a date and location of his marriage to Cloe as Baltimore County, Province of Maryland, before 18 August 1750, based on a docket entry in the St. Johns-Joppa Parish Registerindicating that John's son-in-law Jacob Davies paid the "Ball. of Jo. Grierr Marriage fee."[39] However, it appears that this is a reference to the marriage of John's son Joseph and Ann Lowe. The parish register reflects that this couple did marry at St. John's-Joppa on 18 August 1750.[40]

Disambiguation

Some researchers conflate this John Greer who died in Onslow County, North Carolina, in 1752 with a different John Greer who made his will in Augusta County, Virginia, in 1750, naming the following children:

  • Rebecca Greer b: ABT 1730
  • Alexander Greer b: ABT 1732
  • Martha Greer b: ABT 1734
  • Mary Greer b: ABT 1736

The reference to his second wife Cloe and the matching list of older children in his will made in Onslow County, North Carolina, in April 1752 make clear that the John Greer described in this profile migrated from Baltimore County, Province of Maryland to Onslow County, North Carolina, where he died in 1752; he is not the John Greer who died in Augusta County, Virginia in 1750.

Scott,

You've made a huge improvement to this profile. Thank you.

I am researching the issue of whether the younger son John Greer Jr, son of Chloe, who is named in this John Greer's will is the same person as John Greer, who begins appearing in eastern Tennessee around the same time that John Greer Jr disappears from Onslow County. As part of this, I plan to do some clean up work on this profile, adding sources and streamlining the biography & research notes to conform to WikiTree style guidelines. If anyone is interested in collaborating on this effort with me, please weigh in - thanks!

Carole, I removed the middle name James until a source can be provided to support it. All sources so far only have him listed as John. Since you have requested this info more than once, I went ahead and made the change.

Not 1 document I have seen here or elsewhere states a MIDDLE NAME... always just John Greer. If someone has a document to give us a "citation" for this information please add it here. Thank you

So far working from Lulu Greer-1557 (b:1890) we have SOURCES that reflect the family NAME: GREER, through this Greer-613 (b:1688 Maryland) and here is a SOURCE: "ANN ARUNDEL & BALTIMORE COUNTIES - CERTIFICATE E.I. #3, FOLIO 443: Greer's Discovery, 92 acres, rent 0-3-8 1/2, surveyed to John Greer 24 January 1720, lying on North side of Main Falls of Gunpowder River. Patented to Thomas Greer, Liber E.L. #4, folio 410. John Greer transferred these 92 acres to Mark Guishard 2 March 1747, wife did not join in Deed.

AND then John Greer-614, who married Ann Taylor, there is an "Immigration: DATE: 6 Nov. 1674 -NAME: James Greer-- was sold to Samuel Gibbons, Master of the SHIP: "Batchelor of Bristol". (This from a list of servants of Robt. Ridgely.) Also the Will of Arthur Taylor where he names "John Grear (Greer) and his wife Ann" (his daughter)

I have in my research notes that James Greer m Ann Taylor, dt of Arthur & Margaret Taylor, granddaughter of John & Margaret Taylor who emigrated 1659. Ann Taylor Greer m secondly Lawrence Richardson, m thirdly Oliver Harriott. St John's Parish records are noted as source. I think this is from Sanna's files, she also hired Peden to do research. The children as listed for John and Sarah Day Greer are same as what I have, DOBs correspond. I also have St John's Parish record pages for marriages of John (p105), John died Wilkes Co NC, will recorded June 1782; Moses (p208); Benjamin (pp64, 193); Ann (p99)

I don't see an "edit" on the narrative page and don't know how to enter the google group discussion. John Greer JR, Aquila, & Joseph were in Virginia 1754-1757. Please advise how to share.

We are working on the Bio for John/Sarah Day GREER. And then LOOK at all the people claiming DNA test matching, and I am not even listed, and my papertrail is better than the dna tests...but then I am NOT in the paternal line, even though my Gramma Lulu Greer's line is all male all the way back to HERE.

It looks like two different John Greers have been mixed together in this profile.

Greer-1177 and Greer-613 appear to represent the same person because: Same relationships, locations, approx dates.
Greer-613 and Greer-1177 do not represent the same person because: year of birth/ especially the state of death/year Greer-1177 I can not see the sources mentioned. and they also give a PASSENGER LIST in 1733?? And they site "Virginia Court Records" a Will? There were several John Greer's.
