Biography

Birth and Parents

Reynold de Grey, Knt., 2nd Lord Grey of Ruthin, second but first surviving son and heir of Roger de Grey, Knt., 1st Lord Grey of Ruthin, and Elizabeth de Hastings,[1][2] was born about 1323 -1327 as he was said to have been aged 26 or 30 in the 1353 Inquisition Post Mortem of his father.[3][4][5] He may have been born as early as 1319, as he deposed in 1386 that he was aged 67.[2] Reynold was likely born at Ruthin, Wales, where his father held the barony,

Marriage and Children

Reynold married Eleanor le Strange, daughter of John le Strange, Knt., 2nd Lord Strange of Blackmere[1] and Ankaret Boteler.[3][6][7] They were married after 1344[3] and before 2 November 1353;[8] the marriage likely occurring about 18 October 1352 when Eleanor's step-father, Thomas de Ferrers, acknowledged a debt to Reynold, possibly in connection with their marriage:[3]
"18 Oct 1352: Thomas de Ferariis, knight, acknowledges that he owes to Reginald de Grey of Ruthyn 700 marks; to be levied etc. in the county of Leicester."[9]
Eleanor and Reynold had four sons and two daughters:
  • Reynold, Knt., 3rd Lord Grey of Ruthin, married first Margaret Roos (or Ros) and second to Joan de Astley, having issue with both wives[1] and dying 18 October 1440.[2][3] He was heir to his father in 1388 at age 26;[2][10] and was heir to his mother in 1396[11]
  • John, who was living in 1376[3]
  • Edmund[3]
  • Roger, Rector of Blunham, Bedfordshire, Prebendary of Netheravon; died about 1408[3]
  • Isabel[3]
  • Ida, wife of John Cokayne[3][12]
Another possible child not named by Richardson:
  • Maud, wife of John Tuchet.[6] See discussion on the profile of John Tuchet and research notes on Maud's profile for more information.

Lands and Events

Reynold's father, Roger, died 6 March 1353. Reynold was his heir as John, Reynold's brother (and the heir apparent), had died without issue[2] between 6 January 1349 and 6 February 1350.[7]
The king took his fealty on 20 March 1352/3 and Reynold had livery of the manors of Harrold, Great Brickhill and Flitton, Bedfordshire and Canons Ashby, Northamptonshire. On 1 October 1353, the king took his homage and Reynold had livery of the castle of Ruthin and the cantred of Dyffryn Clwyd. He was also gifted the issues of all his father's lands that had been taken into the king's hands.[2] These additional lands may have included Puddington and Wrest, Bedfordshire; Over Bletchley, Buckinghamshire; Hemingford Grey and Yelling, Huntingdonshire, etc.[3]
In 1352 he was pardoned from a fine of £20 for trespasses and extortions in Bedfordshire. Also, that year, he was charged with the abduction of Margaret, widow of Ralph Fitz Richard, Knt. The next year Reynold and Eleanor received a papal indult for plenary remission; he also presented to the second mediety of the church of Walton, Buckinghamshire that year.[3]
Reynold was summoned to Parliament from 15 March 1353/4 to 20 March 1387/8 by writs directed Reginaldo de Grey de Riffyn or Reginaldo Grey de Ruthyn.[2][3] He was also summoned to a council for military service 20 June 1358.[2]
He accompanied the king, in his retinue, in expeditions to France in 1355 and 1359. He was in France again in 1369.[2][3] In 1358, he witnessed a release to his wife's uncle, Edmund le Boteler, clerk. In 1382, he presented to the church of Great Brickhill, Buckinghamshire and in 1383, he presented to the church at Simpson, Buckinghamshire.[3]
In 1386, Reynold was deposed in the Scrope vs. Grosvenor controversy.[3] At that time, Reynold deposed that he was aged 67 years.[2]

Death

Reynold died on 28 July or 4 August 1388. Eleanor survived him, dying 20 April 1396.[2][3] Their son, Reynold, aged 26 or more, was his heir.[10]
The Inquisition Post Mortem of Reynold Grey of Ruthyn, knight, following a writ of 29 July, 12 Richard II [1388], noted that he held the following lands: Holwell, Hertfordshire, Hemmyngforth, Huntingdonshire; Canons Assheby and Boszate, Northamptonshire; Harewold, Podyngton, Leyghe, Brokkeburgh, Northwode, Wrast, and Flytte, Bedfordshire; Great Brikhull, Stokehamond, West Blecchele, Woketon, Bragenham, Seveneston, and Walton, Buckinghamshire; Ruthin, Shropshire; and London.[10]

Minor edit. It appears Roger de Grey was born about 1323 or about 1327 as written in profile should be Reynold or Reginald de Grey.

Thank you.

Thanks. I have corrected the name in the bio. This profile needs a more major overhaul and is on the long list of profiles managed by the Magna Carta Project in need of attention.
