Biography

Samuel Griffin, son of Samuel Griffin and Ann Avery, was born 27 Sep 1728 at New London, Connecticut.[1],[2] Samuel married 28 Mar 1753, Desire, daughter of Peter Crary, at Stonington, Connecticut.[3],[4] and christened on 29 Sep 1728 in the First Church of Christ in New London.[5] Note slight variation in spelling between two recordations.

Samuel Griffin served in Capt. Lattimore's company of militia, 1757 (French and Indian War Rolls, 1:238).[1]

On 28 Mar 1753, Samuel married Desire/Desier Crary in Stonington, New London, Connecticut.[6] They probably had at least six children, three per the FindAGrave Memorial, two identified in the Nathan Hale source, and one already attached to this profile:

  1. Elisha b. 1757
  2. Eben Griffin, 1758-1849
  3. Nathan Crary Griffin, 1764-1854
  4. Thomas Griffin, Jr., b. 1766
  5. [see Research Notes] Peleg G. Griffin, 1792-1827
  6. Alice, no dates given

Two infant daughters are also mentioned.

Samuel died in 1800 at Searsport, Waldo, Maine. He is buried at Bowditch Cemetery, Searsport, where a monument to Samuel and wife, Desire, call them "Pioneers of the Penobscot [Maine] Region" [7].

Research Notes

The Nathan Hale Cemetery Collection source gives additional information, notably that the son Peleg was born about 1765 and died in boyhood. The dates given above for Peleg came from FindAGrave and do not synch with the other dates of birth in this family. Possibly, the Nathan Hale information is correct, and the Peleg mentioned above is the son of one of the siblings, in other words, Samuel's grandson. On the other hand, Desire, if not deceased, was still of childbearing age. The other thing worth noting on the Nathan Hale card is that the reader is referred to the Patriarch, Peleg Griffin who died in 1827. His card (reached by clicking backward to Image 794) contains 47 names (it's three pages long), without any clear indication of relationships in most cases.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:

Griffin-19040 and Griffin-147 appear to represent the same person because: Both represent the spouse of Desire Crary.
